Lots of times, although not in the past decade or so. No big deal, really.

Although....I once managed at a large fish/pet shop, and one of the new managers with the company was being shown how to 'suck-start' a siphon. She made the near-fatal (literally) errors of:
1. sucking far too hard and long;
2. Inhaling rather than sucking.
She was rewarded with a lungful of grungy aquarium water...which is like partially drowning on dry land...vomited violently several times...nearly passed-out...and had to sit down and recover for about an hour. Fortunately, she was fine, and the introduction of fish gunge into her lungs did not result in a case of bacterial pneumonia or some other delightful infection.

See...I had the same bet....but for only $5...and drank a small cup of it...I only wish it had been for $100.

I was changing the office tank's water today and one of the guys bet me $100 that I wouldn't drink it. I almost did, but since I had just rinsed out the filters in that water I decided against it.

I always suck start the siphon. It's just faster. You can't do that for long withouot getting a mouthful now and again.

Yep, I have! My mom was really worried lol. I did it like 2 or 3 times, the first time I tried to clean my tank I use a python for my 90 gallon but I still have to do it the old-fashioned way for my 10 and 5 gallons.

Okay, I thought this would be a fun poll...be honest now!

How many people have accidentally taken in a little bit of tank water when trying to start a siphon? I'll admit that I've done gravel vacs when I wasn't exactly, err, "awake"

lots of it. my new canister filter doesn't have a primer of course, and I was a little out of practice on my syphoning technique. It was a little warm, with a hint of greens, maybe too fresh, a few tannins, almost fruity with a touch of bitter. DOH! That's the wine I'm a drinking!

lol better than sucking on the end of a siphon when you're trying to siphon gas outta yer car

been there, done that. Makes fish water taste like a fine wine .

there's always something worse as for tim's method - sucking on the end of the hose is more fun - its a challenge to get the water as close as you can to your mouth before pulling away.. its fun

but then, i'm known to be a little odd - my husband thinks i'm strange.....
