Honestly, both sides of the argument are weak because we flat-out have no idea how anyone rich or famous cares for their tank...

On one hand, it's been suggested that none of the rich or famous are up-to-date with their fish knowledge of tank maintenance. Included in the original post that suggested that was also the challenge to have someone present evidence of a rich or famous person who personally nitpicks their own tank(s). Obviously, no one has been able to list such a person. Unfortunately, so far we only have confirmations of famous fishies in a few locations (though there were suggestions about others), and none of us have personally monitored those keepers' maintenance schedules. For all we know, some gorgeous movie star may be a fish-nerd in hiding. We definitely are all surprised when some of these celebrities' hobbies come to light from time to time, so we obviously don't really know that much about their lives...

On the other hand, for all we know, they could all know nothing whatsoever about their tanks. Maybe it's their first tank. I know mine was maintained horribly. I didn't know the first thing about what I was getting in to. With time, I've learned a whole lot about it and it is very interesting to me, but that doesn't mean that any given celebrity has the same feelings about studying the Nitrogen Cycle or the gph of the power filters currently available. It comes down to the fact that we really have no clue whatsoever...

Now, I can understand where Cory's coming from because my personal opinion would be that most celebrities, if they keep fish, don't know TOO much about them. I don't have any evidence for such a conclusion, it's just an assumption. I try to give them the benefit of the doubt and not place much faith in my assumption, but until evidence either supports or disproves it, that's where mine leans. But I also can't imagine that most of them know how to write HTML, fly a plane, or bleed their brake line. These are all hobbies that people spend their free time studying. No one gets mad at them for hiring someone to run their website, fly them across the country, or fix their car...

The fact that a fishtank is an ecosystem, not an inanimate object doesn't change that these are comparable. The freeway is also an ecosystem. If the person doesn't know how to bleed their brake system in their car (an inanimate object), they end up with no brakes, and possibly kill someone else. So they pay someone to maintain their car because they like having a car. It's not a necessity, just a luxury (even a Geo). If they don't know how to clean a fishtank, they end up with a nasty tank, and possibly kill a fish. So they pay someone to maintain their tank because they like having a tank. It's also not a necessity, just another luxury...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

Famous people, being people would have varying degrees of interest in their tanks just as we nonfamous people do. Some of them, the famous people, probably fuss over their tanks at every opportunity and some probably rarely look at the thing. I think the important point is that the fish of the rich and famous are probably better cared for overall regardless of the interest of their owners. The fussy owners fuss just as the poor fussy owners fuss but the rich fussy owners can afford better stuff. The fish of the uninterested rich and famous fare better than the fish of the uninterested poor because the tank gets maintained by pros.

Rich famous people are just people who are rich and famous. Whether just lucky or incredibly talented they have interests outside their work just as we poor schlubs do. You really have no idea how much time and effort any of them put into their hobbies.

Now for the real point as this has gone way off topic. If some of us poor common folk are interested in the tanks of the rich and famous, we should be able to discuss it without someone coming along and tossing a wet blanket. I personally don't know about the tanks of the rich and famous but I would be interested in reading replies from some who do.

There's a big difference between being gone for 8 hours and a person coming once a week to maintain a tank...

Many of us go to work and leave the tank untended all day. We even go on vacations, weekend camping trips and poker games that go to the wee hours of the morning.

IMO still a weak argument.

BTW who keeps watch over your tank when you're at work? OMG who watches the tanks at the LFS when it's closed?

So many questions, Mike

I hope to have a fish tank in my office some day.

Can't guarantee that I'll look after it though. :%)

If I had known that you guys were going to turn this into an argument I wouldn't have said anything.

Having somebody come in once a week to do water changes is not how a tank should ideally be maintained. Notice how I said "ideally". Sure, a tank can be maintained that way and the fish can survive, but the system in general is at a severe disadvantage as a tank that has a caring owner that is always there.

What happens if the tank springs a leak or bursts during the middle of the night? What happens when the fish become seriously ill and need immediate attention? What happens if a fish is attacked or is injured? Nothing happens, and therein lies the problem. Tank-maintaining businesses are not open all the time, so if something goes wrong, the fish have to wait and suffer until something can be done. Emergencies happen with every tank, and all though it may be hard for you guys to believe, they don't always happen conveniently when the tank maintainers are open and willing to come out. Hardly a "weak argument" if you ask me.

And about the doctors/dentists having fish tanks, in all office tanks around here, the tanks are set up and maintained by one or more of the employees who are knowledgeable about keeping fish.

Cory,

So, Just because someone doesnt enjoy or care for their tank in the manner you prefer, they should not get to enjoy them at all?

It is not fair to assume that celebrities have no idea whats going on in their tanks, just because they pay people for setting it up and upkeep. They could have odd schedules and not be able to give regular care. And even if they don't know whats going on in their tank, they might just enjoy watching them. As long as the fish are healthy, i dont see the problem

People like that shouldn't have tanks in their house because they don't take care of their own tanks, or even know the first thing about fishkeeping for that matter.

First off, why do they have to know about fishkeeping? As long as their tanks are kept clean, even by a professional, they the fish are in a good environment. So, why does it matter?

They just see fish tanks as inanimate decorations, and not living ecosystems that require attention and care.

If a professional tank cleaner is cleaning their tanks, they the tanks are getting attention and care. As for the living exosystems, well we are everyone guilty of not giving proper care of our fish! Because, we cannot create an exact duplicate of the ecosystem the fish come from. We can come close. But not exactly. The reason is, the ecosystems get direct sunlight for light, have constant temp changes on a daily basis, have constant chemical make up levels (not increases in ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates), have a large area to roam, has a multitude of mates to pick from, etc etc etc.

There are many things we do not know about keeping a large variety of some fish. But we still attempt to, so that we can some day do it. We learn. If we never learned how to keep fish, then none of us would have any. And how many fish you think lived in terrible conditions, just so you can now keep fish in a tank in your house?

As for the made up names you stated earlier, who is to say they made them up? Many fish go by different common names around the world, and there are many that have different common names within the US alone.

I know several professional foot ball players personally, that have tanks set up in their houses. Their tanks are kept in immaculate conditions! The fish are fed well, and the water conditions are immaculate! So what does it matter, where the care comes from, if it is used as a show piece, or anything else?????? As long as the care is done! What difference does it make who pays for the care, as long as it is done!

And yes, there is a raccoon butterfly fish;

As well, many people refer to the foxface as raccoon face fish too;

I'm going to have to side with Natalie on this one. I saw Missy Elliot on MTV's Cribs with her saltwater tank talking about her "raccoon fish" and some other fish that she was calling by a made up name. I personally found it irritating, because I work hard to take care of my fish myself. She seemed to think that her tank was just something to show off to the people who come to her house.

At least the fish are taken care of, though. Well, hopefully.

I take care of a friends tank (and get paid very well) because he doesn't know the first thing about fish keeping but really enjoys having it to watch.

I'd like to see one person name a celebrity that takes care of their own fish tank.
