I do like opals, very emotive stone. Probably like the milky opals better than the blacks.

I have to go with Sapphire for precious stones, used to be ruby, but I have a sapphire that is so dark it is almost black in my engagement ring

For semi-precious I'd say moonstone.

If you went to a natural history gem exhibit what would you spend the most time staring at?

Errrr....whatever had good enough lighting that would let me photograph it ...then I'd wander off to an exhibit about photographers..smithsonian had a great one about WW2 photographers with a whole section on [link= Margaret Bourke-White]http://www.gallerym.com/artist.cfm?ID=17" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link]...yeah yeah I've got a one track mind....honestly stones like that don't really hold my attention...having said that, I'm always picking up small rocks, just about all my coat and jacket pockets have a rock or two from here and there.

Didn't say you have to wear jewelry. If you went to a natural history gem exhibit what would you spend the most time staring at?

As for semi-precious... don't know if you count it but I like obsidian. Rose Quartz is really nice too and I know that counts.

Well if we go with semi-precious, that'd be my birthstone, amethyst

Diamonds
Emeralds
Sapphires
Lapis Lazuli
Turquoise
Black Opals
White Opals

As for precious metals :
Platinum
White Gold
Silver
Yellow Gold

I really do not like yellow gold - I prefer the white metals better.

Rubies are my favorite. Diamonds probibly my least. I don't wear jewelry much although I do wear a diamond pendant (a gift) every day and a diamond nose stud (only because the piercing studio didn't have any rubies that I liked.)

I like to think that whoever designed marine life was thinking of it as basically an entertainment medium. That would explain some of the things down there, some of the unearthly biological contraptions

Amethyst
Diamonds
Garnets
Sapphires
Jade

Hmmm...I don't wear any precious stones other than my engagement ring. Really my favorite thing in jewelry is silver or white gold.

Me and some friends were talking about precious stones and I was inspired to make this thread.

So what is it? I think I'm going to go with fire opal. Gorgeous black stone. With little sparks of color. Wow.

Moondog, I can't think of anything clever to say this late into my shift so you'll just have to settle for this:

jade and amethyst Both are pretty, and amethyst's supposed to aid in sleep and good dreams, which is something I'm in desperate need of

I go through phases... at the moment very attracted to seed pearls like you see in antique jewellery.

I also have a diamond and green sapphire ring I am very fond of. I like unusual stones...also like pink sapphires. Sapphires come in lots of different colours not just blue.

I have a chequerboard amethyst that I get lots of comments on. Because of the cut it is very sparkly and people don't know what kind of stone it is but it is just the old garden variety amethyst jazzed up.

I have to say OPALS!!! I love a good firey opal...there is nothing like it...I have an opal ring that my nanny gave me...it is wonderful, but I don't dare wear it because it is so delicate...Heidi:%)
