Denver Broncos.

Although, for the sake of workplace politics - I also like the dallas cowboys, texas rangers, dallas stars (i don't like basketball)

only reason why i've gotta support those teams is that one of our customers owns (or part owns) one of the above mentioned dallas teams

yes, I work in a RICH neighbourhood.

Actually, polo is the oldest team sport recorded. It was played in Persia, Pakistan, India, Tibet, China, and Mongolia long before any others. The Mongolians used to play it with the decapitated heads of their opponents. Polo was actually played before the Egyptians even had an organized civilization.

Brandi - that would make it the first game, and why isn't it called the egyptian pasttime then?

Billy - If you do all that training in the minors, why are there some guys built like houses playing in the majors? Also, the object in golf isn't to catch the ball...it's to put it into a little cup. And there is that huge mit on the end of his hand that golfers don't wear. One time my friend got hit by a golf ball that broke his leg....so injuries don't define a sport.

My point is that you do see fat guys "running" the bases at times and fat guys golfing and bowling. Not too many fat guys out on the ice playing hockey.

Guys like Tiger are the exception to golf, not the rule.

Now don't take offense, because games like baseball and golf are hard and require a lot of skill, but don't necessarily require a lot of athletecism.

ok - I'll admit I'm a little biased towards hockey, it is my favorite sport and all.

one last thing:

"The symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter Disease include pain over the bump just below your knee cap, usually worsened by exercise that involves repeated bending and straightening of the knee and by the direct force on that area. Treatment consists of limiting activities, putting ice on the area, and using something for the pain. If the knee pain occurs during running and jumping, cutting back on the intensity of training during this period of rapid growth should help in relieving the acute symptoms.

With contact sports like football or soccer, the use of a kneepad to protect the tender bump can also be helpful."

My doctor said it was ok to play baseball with this disease

LOL, j/k. While I do see your point, I think baseball is indeed a sport because you have to be in some sort of shape to play it. You do not see 300 lb people who can't run playing baseball.
Case and point-We always had to put in a pinch runner for this one kid on my brother's little league team because the hitter was a big kid.
Also, it was the first sport, dating back to relgious rituals during the Ejyptian Period

LMAO, tell ya what matt, I'll just handle a little of the flaming with a little of my own stuff

[flame]

I played baseball all through high school and ran 20 poles (that's along the warning track from foul pole to foul pole) a day plus a 3-5 mile run every day. I suck at trig, otherwise I could actually figure up the distance of poles in feet for ya. Instead, I'm just gonna guess 200 feet. So that all works out to approximately 5 miles a day in running. We practiced in such a manner organized from the start of January (I've actually played a game in a snowstorm) until the end of May (And TX summer starts around March). By some quick addition, that's 20 weeks. Now for the real math...
5 miles/day*5 days/week*20 weeks/season = 500 miles of running

Oops...I left out the wind sprints, hills, bleachers, and baserunning practice we did every day...oh well, they were only about 1 hour of practice daily, so I'm sure they didn't add up to much...

FORTUNATELY, I was just a pitcher-only. Therefore, I got to skip out on the timed 40's, 100's, singles, doubles, triples, and 4 corners sprints...

Also FORTUNATELY, I only played in HIGH SCHOOL. Granted, my high school was ranked in the top ten in the nation, but I now attend Texas Tech, a DECENT Division 1 university, and I can't play for them because I'm not in good enough SHAPE...

Of course, I'm SURE that all this training only occurs down in the amatuer ranks. I'll bet none of those major leaguers actually do any of this kind of stuff nowadays...

And as for the comparison to golf, I remember a stat on Tiger that said he could bench-press something like 240 lbs, but I'm sure it's just so he looks ripped under that Nike Polo he's wearing...

And for my final thing to point out, I happen to be a huge Ken Griffey Jr. fan, and I can't remember the last time a professional golfer disintegrated his wrist by jumping into a wall at full speed...and DIDN'T drop the ball

[/flame]

It's the best city EVER

You guys just need to forget about the baaseball stuff anyways. It's not even a sport. The players of a sport must be in shape to play that sport. baseball (which I've played) fall under the GAME category with ..... golf.

Isn't it just terrible when you see people (who shall remain nameless) take out their disgust with their favorite team's performance on others who have nothing whatsoever to do with that crappy performance?

That's called displacement of anger, and displacement of anger is WRONG

'Hardest thing to do' is relative. While I bet I can't hit a 90 mph fastball, I bet very few if any baseball players can lean off a horse at 40 mph and reach under it's neck to hit a ball without falling off, and I bet very few can stop a slapshot from a hockeyplayer. You can't really call something the 'hardest thing to do in sports.' It's an opinion, not a quantifiable fact.

I always knew Aggiemarine had my back.

When I played little leage when I was 11 I broke the record in my league for hitting percentage. I just never thought hitting was that hard.

I never said that baseball didn't take skill, just not athleticism.

So wouldn't something that you need that much skill, practice, time, etc for be called a sport? I just don't understand how you can say it's hard, you need skill, blah blah, and still say it isn't a sport. LOL..I'm not being mean (I hate how it's so hard to express through typing), I just like a good debate

In my mind, difficulty doesn't make something a sport. A good game of chess can be very difficult, but it's still a game. To be a sport, in my personal opinion, an activity must fit three criteria:
1) It must be athletic.
2) It must have a clearly defined and accepted set of rules.
3) It must have quantifiable non-objective results.

While all umpire callings in all sports incorporate some degree of objectivity, their intent is not to. To further demonstrate my meaning here, let's take figure skating, which I believe is an athletic activity, not a sport, because the judges are creating scores based on a personal opinion of the performance, not whether a goal was scored, for example. My set of rules also places golf out of the sport category and into the game category, because it does not require athleticism. This is just my opinion though.

So basketball, tennis, football, soccer and hockey are not sports? Two definitions in the dictionary of "sport" 1) A specific diversion, usually involving physical exercise and having a set form and body of rules. 2) One known for the manner of one's acceptance of the rules of a game or of a difficult situation. I think that you have valid points and have your own opinion, I just don't agree with you.

Lol, I take a day off from FP and fall behind by an entire page

Well, let's start from the top

1)If you do all that training in the minors, why are there some guys built like houses playing in the majors?

Well, there are some players in the Major Leagues that show up and turn out to not be in very good shape. The likelihood of such a player being present is rather rare, with some of the more notable or recent ones being Cecil Fielder, Babe Ruth, David Wells, Hideki Irabu, and Bob Hamelin. If you don't know one or more of these players, a quick search off of Yahoo will result in more than enough info. As for the players themselves, Ruth was arguably the greatest hitter that ever lived, Fielder was a rather impressive home run hitter (though his strikeout ratio ended his career prematurely), Hamelin is no longer a well-known player (he had one season of fame followed by obscurity), Irabu has disappearred after not being in good enough shape, and Wells has been benched a couple of different times throughout his career because of being out of shape. Your excetion to the rule statement about Tiger Woods and golf applies to these players for baseball. Sorry, can't let you solely use such a statement when it benefits you.

I'm not gonna mess with the injury aspect, though, I'll bet if he had CAUGHT that golf ball, he wouldn't have had a broken leg

As for Aggie's definition of a sport, it is rather reasonable, though it requires the definition of the term "athletic". According to Dictionary.com, athletic means Characterized by or involving physical activity or exertion.

Using such a definition then tells me that baseball, hockey, basketball, football, golf, tennis, soccer, etc. are all sports because they all do involve physical exertion. Questioning whether golf or baseball require exertion is rather dull since baseball involves a massive amount of strain upon one's arm, especially the pitcher, and running, though for relatively short bursts, is rather prevalent and central to the completion of the game. Golf is rather rough on the golfer's back and arms under any circumstances, and the amount of effort and strain that goes into every swing is rather impressive. I think a better look at such sports would be to say they are not AEROBIC sports.

Also, on a side note, your doctor's not the best. My best friend growing up also had Osgood-Schlatter Disease. He was an incredible athlete who played basketball, football, and baseball. He was not allowed to play any of them due to all being proven contact sports and having the ability to cause SEVERE stress and pain on the joints of his knees. With such a condition, you wouldn't be able to leg out a double any more than you'd be able to run up-and-down a court. Actually, the intense switch from inactivity to physical exertion on joints and leg muscles is far more likely to result in injury in baseball than it is in aerobic sports where movement remains constant and comparable throughout an entire contest. The basis of such is the same as why stop-and-go traffic is worse for your car than just driving 70 mph non-stop on the highway. I've also suffered many injuries in my career in baseball and it continues to stand as a contact sport on EVERY amateur level at which play is available. Permission slips and waivers continue to be required by insurance companies for kids to play, as with all other contact sports.

Also, I wouldn't get too heady about Aggie taking your back. While he DOES defend the idea that every sport is difficult and has difficult aspects, baseball fits as a sport by his definition system, which goes AGAINST your argument...

I won't argue in a million years that baseball's aspects are any mroe difficult than those of polo, basketball, football, or hockey. I can't imagine playing polo and am utterly impressed at the sight of it. But I do believe that while hitting was easy when you were 11, I could strike your butt out on three straight pitches in a heartbeat. I've also played roller hockey (sorry, our access to ice is a tad limited in Texas), and I can say that it WAS a rather athletic sport.

Unfortunately, just a quick check of some stats showed that Mike Komisarek, a defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens, sizes in at 6'4", 237 lbs. David Wells, a pitcher for the San Diego Padres, sized in at a massive 6'4", 248 lbs. Granted, he's 11 lbs heavier, but he is regarded as one of the most out of shape big leaguers there is. Guess a couple fat hockey players slipped through the cracks after all.

Information above was taken from http://www.dictionary.com]http://www.dictionary.com[/link], [link=Hockey stats]http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players[/link], and [link=MLB Stats

Yes, I do have to agree that baseball is a sport. Have you ever seen how those guys sprint to first base after a line drive? Or how a fielder will dash to the ball and jump to make an incredible catch? You can't tell me that's not athletic. Being an avid golfer myself, however, I have to say that it isn't very athletic. It is rather relaxing though.

Everybody has some good points, however Mike Komisarek isn't fat. Big in hockey is a lot different than big in baseball. You'd also be sprised to see what a difference 11 lbs. looks like in the gut region.

"I could strike your butt out on three straight pitches in a heartbeat"

I quit playing when I was 11, that's when my knees really started deteriorating. No doubt you could strike me out, just like there is no doubt that I could scorch by you playing hockey. Though I do still have some great hand-eye coordination.

"I'll bet if he had CAUGHT that golf ball, he wouldn't have had a broken leg"

You are right, however a ball travelling at over 130 mph with an impact size of very roughly one or two square inches is also very likely to break his hand -- even if he was wearing a glove.

"With such a condition, you wouldn't be able to leg out a double any more than you'd be able to run up-and-down a court."

Actually I was better able to leg out a double than I was to, say run a mile....or half mile for that matter. To this day the only type of running I can do is sprinting. After about a half-mile my knees won't hold my weight any longer. That rules out basketball and soccer, but somehow skating isn't a problem. I think it's prolonged impact, as there isn't a whole lot of impact in skating.

Once I made a diving save playing ping-pong and worked up a sweat too. I play a team version as well, and it gets very difficult. That makes ping-pong a sport, right?

Actually in some places, ping-pong IS a sport. We had people come into our gym class and demonstrate "The sport of ping-pong". Dude, those little balls go at like 80 mph, and I know I work up a sweat and my arms get tired after a game.
However, you do not really physically have to be in shape to play UNLESSSSSSS....what is your deffinition of "in shape"?
Surely it can't be only looking like you work out? From playing this stupid game (I hate it btw LOL), I know that you 1.) have to have decent hand/eye coordination, and 2.) Have to have decently strong arms or you will get tired very quickly.
Well, both of those things fit my criteria for being "in shape".
The only thing is, I don't know if I would classify this as "Athletic". There's my problem. So I guess I don't really have an opinion, but I DO know that in some places it's considered a sport.

OK sorry for the delay in action...weekends are bad for me.

"you do not really physically have to be in shape to play"

I'd argue the same for any sport. You don't have to be in shape to play, but to compete at a high level you do need to be in shape.

Nobody let me make that arguement about baseball, so you can't make it against ping-pong.

I think we already defined athletic as physical exertion or whatever so ping-pong would then be a sport. Right up there with baseball and hockey.

I'll give you a little information on Buffalo Billy.
