Well, there is this Appalatian (sp?) folk tale I have heard about a fish that learned to breathe air. I think I have to say that is my favorite

Rumplestiltskin

I like Rumpelstiltskin (not to be confused with Rapunzel, the chick with the long hair). In Rumpelstiltskin the girl in it was disempowered and people underestimated her. Yet she triumphed over her circumstances and became queen.

I had a story on tape when I was little. I loved how the girl in the story pretended she didn't know Rumplestiltskin's name and gave two false guesses before revealing the name to the great surprise of all.

Maybe this story is the Persephone story recycled. Persephone is taken to the underworld and then becomes queen.

the narnia stories - ok, so they are a clumsy allegory, but they are beautiful. And the allegory is what makes them more than just simple fairy stories, they do make christianity seem beautiful again.

I like to think that whoever designed marine life was thinking of it as basically an entertainment medium. That would explain some of the things down there, some of the unearthly biological contraptions

any Greek, Roman, Celtic or Norse myth... the story of Calypso is one of my favorites

Cant remeber why I liked it. I was a kid. That was 20 years ago.

I also had the one about the prince that turned into a wearwolf. I liked that one eventually but it did give me a few nightmares as a kid.

....just looked it up. the tinderbox is about a soldier that kills a witch and steals her tinderbox and when he uses the tinderbox and it summons three dogswith eyes as big as teacups, mill wheels and round towers, respectively appear to do his bidding and help him win the princess.
