They really just need to come up with another name, differinciating between the good and bad "hackers".
People see the word Hacker, and it's automatically associated with someone or something wrongfull.

the "bad" hackers are usually called "crackers" because they are malicious in their intent and try to break into systems. whereas most "hackers" these days are people who write programs all the time, not necessarily for evil or to break into something.

I hear you gup. It's just one of those specialty forums. Some love goldfish and some hate 'em. At that site, you never have to worry about the latter

hackers just look around, crackers damage.

Subtle but important difference.

hmmm, I don't like "cracker", besides people who crack software and games are called crackers, but they are not necissarily hackers.

was it actually hacked, or was it the BB virus that took out those forums using vBB who didnt bother updating their security??

Virus spread by detecting vBB sites and then exploiting a hole to take them down, a load of sites got hit.

The fact that many other sites were hacked except us obviously means that the hacker is FishProfiles member...

I was a member on a site that was cracked once. Not a pretty sight. Don't want to go through that again. Well, I don't know if the hacker had to have much skill - his gf was the admin and he wasn't a very nice guy. To make a long story short, one day I found out I was banned from the site for no reason, it was pretty much gone forever, and a few months later I hear back from the admin again, she was fine and escaping the bf. *whew*. Miss the forum, but I am glad she's safe.

Joe Potato; I do feel ignored now! What? Do the hackers think they're too good for us?

LOL, Joe should be on that AOL commercial; "duh, I want to get hacked, duh, I want my computer to slow down, really slowly, (and Joe) why can't they hack my computer too, am I not good enough?" roflmao

Goldfish Paradise, another forum I frequent, had recently been hacked. Someone there reported that another fish website was hacked.

Anyone else heard about this? I wonder if we were affected?

When I learned the goldfish site was hacked (by a blatant message when I tried to get to the site ), that was my first thought. Someone was very unhappy with the admin or mods.

At least at that site, someone suspected it was related to the other sites going down as it apparently happend on the same day.

EDIT: Well, it as partially up again, but had a wierd message down at the bottom and the whole page wouldn't load. They are having some real issues trying to get Goldfish Paradise back up and running. They've been down more than they've been up in the last two weeks.

I can think of 3 sites that were hacked recently, but that was by the same person who had a score to settle with the respective admins of those sites. This site was not involved in all the drama nor do we even have many of the same members so we were not at risk from that person.

I have no idea what happened with the goldfish site though and I doubt it's the same person that hacked the other 3 I'm thinking of.

Awww - Lindy, wasn't that sweet. Thanks for making me not feel ignored .

Well, Goldfish Paradise was up for a very short while, and running very sluggishly. It's back down again and this time, I get a message that it doesn't exist . Prior, it gave an error message only and before that, a hacker message. They were originally hit around December 20th or just before/after. I found a thread on the subject there. Maybe they had to take it offline to work on it.

I just know that more than one fish site was hacked, according to others, on the same night.

It's inevitable, for some reason, the more popular your site gets, no matter what it's about, there will be more and more people out there wanting to use you as target practice.

"i know that means nothing to about 85% of you "

Anyhoo, I can't comprehend how anyone would be bored enough to hack a goldfish website, but hey, maybe that's just me.

Having yourself as unpingable *meaning it doesn't respond to a ping request*, doesn't really indicate how "strong" a firewall and/or router is. It's simply a feature that most come with that you can turn on and off if you know how.

Seeing as how I personally have yet to see this place down or taken over, I'm assuming the equipment FP has choosen to use must be at least decent.

They really just need to come up with another name, differinciating between the good and bad "hackers".
People see the word Hacker, and it's automatically associated with someone or something wrongfull.
