A shop near me has a ***edit*** size is about 20CM (8+inches) oscar in a tank that is way too small. Poor guy can hardly turn, let along get a swim up. I wish shops wouldn't do that.

It isn't an lfs. Just a shop that thinks a fish on show would be cool. How does this happen?

Makes me sad when I see that poor wishie

(I mixed my number and scale it is not a 20inch oscar as I originally said, I sarted in cm and ended in inches... tres confusement)

A 20 inch oscar?

While it's bad that they keep it in a small tank, I have to wonder how they could have gotten it to that size. Biggest I've ever seen was a shade over 15".

I've seen this in local shops. that someone traded it in and they had no where else to keep it until someone buys it.

Sounds like just another case of someone uneducated about fish

I see this occasionally too... alot of people want "small office critters" and so they go out and get one of the following:

1) Betta/Plant Bowl
2) Goldfish Bowl
3) Danios/male guppies/neons in a bowl or other small tank

Its not that people are doing it on purpose, were just taught from a young age that a fish is a small, short-lived, pet and not many people do the research to tell them otherwise

This guy is not in an LFS he is a 'themed' display in a seafood outlet. A touch tasteless really when it is oggling it's cousins on ice day in and day out.

That oscar thinks: "Am I next?" Looks left and right

What's wrong with a well kept betta in a bowl in an office? When I used to rescue them, they lived perfectly well in bowls on my desk in my room, with proper care and attention. Surely a well-maintained betta is 1000x better than a goldfish in a bowl?

I have worked at several public sector places with beautiful, well maintained display tanks, kept by fish enthusiasts on the staff. They were very beneficial for clients especially the children (one place was a centre for children with disabilities (specifically children with limb amputations) and they loved sitting watching the fish.

I was always so worried whenever we had aggressive clients that they would put a chair or a fist through the tanks. That;'s why I'd prefer these public sector tanks to be outside of clients' reach, though not view.

I like to think that whoever designed marine life was thinking of it as basically an entertainment medium. That would explain some of the things down there, some of the unearthly biological contraptions

I'm sorry if I have been confusing.... I was refering to the "keep your betta in this small bowl with this humungus plant and don't feed it" trend.

I agree with the betta's in small bowls, but nothing to small. But also, a betta isn't going to get 8inches or larger.

If I ever had a shop and had a tank on display. Bet I would have some kind of protective glass in front of it to prevent any crazies from touching it in anyway

I have seen some small fishes (neon tetras, ottos and shrimps) being displayed in a picture like aquarium. These poor creatures are literally live in a 2-dimensional world.
