Today in my Animal Science - Feeding and Nutrition class our prof told us about something that caught my interest. We were talking about enzymes and he mentions he knows how to cure lactose intolerance! Well of course that caught my attention right away. Anyway, here's what he told us:

First, you drink a small amount of milk/dairy product each day... a teaspoon or so. Gradually increase the amount, little by little, each day until you're up to drinking as much milk as you like! The thing is you start growing bacteria in your gut that produce lactase and you can digest lactose normally. Take too much lactose right away and you can't handle it. Take a two-week break from injesting lactose and you're back to square 1. But it seems to me analogous to cycling an aquarium... only with just one chemical... anyway, I thought you might find that interesting!

The professor told us they've known how to do this with pigs for around 30 years, but human nutritionists are just now catching on. No offense to human nutritionists intended .

I think I'm going to try this out. It's an experiment! But it's an experiment that will begin after this weekend because I don't want to have various gastrointestinal disturbances while I'm camping.

I thought the bacteria that produces lactase simultaneously bloats and cramps your stomach...

uhh, thats what I had done to me when i was allergic to bees. Injected me with small concentrations of venom till I became more immune to the venom. I'm still allergic, but only if I get stung by 12 bees at once

meriadoc, that's exactly what they did to me... unfortunately it didn't seem to work. After a year and a half of weekly injections I decided I'd take my chances with the bees!

But the thing about lactose intolerance does make sense. I wonder if you can get New Improved Cycle for tummies? :%) (Come to think of it you can! It's yoghurt with living cultures. Worth a try maybe?)
