Well, I had taken a short break from vacuuming the 10-gallon tanks in my room... I was still in my room but both ends of the siphon were (as I thought) securely in the tank, and the bucket was sitting full and ready to be taken across the hall and dumped. Then my dad came in asking for help moving the TV cabinet downstairs (as a Christmas gift, Mom and Dad are treating themselves to a new big-screen TV and he was going to install the wall bracket). So I went down and helped clear off the cabinet. Then Mom hears the sound of a small waterfall coming from the laundry room down the hall. There was a lot of water dripping down from around the ceiling light! Since my room is just about the laundry room, Dad asks me to check my aquariums. Well you guessed it. The siphon drained pretty well the whole tank out onto the floor. What a mess... It housed three rummy-nose tetras, and at least two were still swimming while I hurriedly poured in a couple more buckets of water and then switched off the power to the tanks so the heater wouldn't break and the filter wouldn't burn itself out. Well, that tank got a pretty major water change... Now I'd better go replace the water in the tank... And you can all send your best wishes that the rummies survive ok...

Well........... I guess that's a lesson to US not to go off & leave a siphon anywhere near our tanks. Wow............ bet that was a mess to clean up.

Yes, best wishes that your rummies survive & best wishes that you have a happy & drier New Year!

Ooof, that's not good. I hope your floors are shiny clean now that they've been given a good washing. At least you were awake when it happened and could get to them right away. My friend had a corner filter in his tank, and the airline popped off the pump, and slowly siphoned his whole tank while he slept. Imagine his surprise when he woke up!

I think your fish'll be fine, as long as the gravel stayed wet, you shouldn't have a problem.

Yeah they got a pretty thorough water change, if only half the gravel got vacuumed. One of the rummies lost some of the membrane on its tail (probably got stuck under gravel), but that seems to be the only injury.
