Do you think that fish move by swimming around, or does it appear more like they are flying or gliding through the water? I've often wrestled with this question myself, so I'm curious to see what other aquarists think.

I'd like to say glide but I can always see at the least those pectoral fins going like crazy. They're workin' for it, it's not just gliding.

I can see what Mousling is saying as far as seeing them moving their fins as they move, but i think swimming to fish is sort of like walking to us. It's second nature.

So you glide rather than walk, then?

Some swim, some glide. Lamniforme sharks, for exampl, glide through the water. You can actually watch them change the angle of attack on their pectoral fins to move up or down in the water. Then, of course, some fish are definately swimming, as pointed out by the frantic pectoral fin action of a lot of ray-finned fishes like puffers.

'pends of the fish I think.

Although as I walk towards my tank on my desk I often think they look like they are flying through the air, suspended.

Never ceases to make me think 'huh, so kewl'
