I'm looking for a website that features a sizable collection of scientific articles. Pretty much what I'm looking for is aquatic biology and chemistry. I use Springerlink at school, but more than half of the articles are blocked off even with the university's subscription. Does anyone know of better alternatives?

Thanks.

JStor is another one, but it might also have a lot of articles blocked at your school (there are at mine, at least I can read the first page though).

Haven't tried PubMed before, but it didn't seem to have much that interested me.

JStor is decent, but like you said, plenty of articles are still blocked.

You can use Jstor and those types of engines to search for an article, then search your uni's database to see if your uni has the journal available in the library. You might find that the uni has more hardcopy subscriptions than electronic subscriptions.

For example, I go here to start research(for this example under the broad search of biology):

bio databases

Then I use my library search to see if we get a subscription to the journal that the article I found is in.

Big problem with many of these online databases is that they're subscription only. Or, they have some public content (amounting to around 10% of the articles contained) but the rest are pay per view.

Now there's something that you can lobby your policitians to spend money on - a proper public online database of scientific articles with free access.

See if "sciencedirect" needs a subscription or can be accessed by your uni?

==================

Just checked my uni's listing for Marine Science databases. You could check to see if there is any that has free access. Here is what they have;

ASFA
BIOSIS previews
Georef
Georef in process
Oceanic abstracts
REEF
Science direct

Agricola is a pretty good abstract and article database for biological type stuff, but limited to relatively recent papers.
