Mostly inhabiting deeper waters, they are found very rarely. If I were to keep one I would prefer a Ratfish rather than the long-nosed types. :%) Also would cost a fortune to house and purchase.:%) [span class="edited"][Edited by Shinigami 2004-08-23 22:08][/span] -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |

I looked at the nose and assumed it was a goblin shark, but upon closer inspection I noticed that, even though cartilaginous, it lacked gill slits and had an operculum, which meant that it was a chimaera... Well by the very fact that you do NOT see chimaeras on the market means that you're either going to pay someone money to go out and fish it for you, or you're going to go out and fish it out yourself. The other problem is actually retrieving the fish. Deepwater species of Anthias and Angelfish are known to be more expensive; a well-known example is the Clarion's Angelfish, which can cost around $4000. Relative to the chimaera, the depth these angelfish are found at is nothing. A deepwater fish such as this may be quite hard to pull out of the water, as the movement must be gradual. On top of that, cartilaginous fish lack swim bladders and are not able to adjust their buoyancy anywhere near to the control that bony fish have. This would make it very difficult to bring them up to the surface and it complicates matters. There are good reasons why there are few deep sea fish in public aquariums just because of the matter of how fish keep themselves buoyant at their normally deep sea levels. The longnose chimaeras have a number of species, ranging from two to five feet in adult length. Thus you can expect a relatively large tank (at least 1000 gallons). I'm not sure on the specifics of the species, though, as no one actually does keep chimaeras, but if these fish are coldwater, it can be expected that a chiller would be required, and unfortunately these are REALLY expensive (several hundred dollars for one that would have to cool an aquarium large enough to keep one of these). Sorry to dash your dreams, but there is almost no way you can obtain this animal, much less maintain it. But how about the Paddlefish? It will grow massive, even moreso than the chimaeras, but since I've seen them sold I know they are way easier to get. :%) [span class="edited"][Edited by Shinigami 2004-08-23 22:23][/span] -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |

Now, Clarion Angels are found in waters up to about 300 feet deep, and possibly a bit beyond that (limited by the depth to which corals can descend). Chimaeras, on the other hand, live in the abyssal depths. The sort of place you're looking at as a chimaera habitat is Challenger Deep off the Philippine coastline ... this is, wait for it, THIRTY SEVEN THOUSAND FEET DEEP. At that depth, pressure is of the order of 75 TONS per square inch. So getting it to the surface will be a tad expensive. You'll need a ship of around 30,000 tons displacement with a deck crane capable of lifting 300 tons, a deep submersible with a capture facility that includes pressure-control airlocks, about 400 sailors to crew the ship, a couple of marine biologists to man the submersible, and then a means of keeping the chimaera alive in an airlocked aquarium under pressure. Budget for this little project? Hmm. You won't get much change out of $500 million. Think how many Discus you could keep for that sum of money ![]() ![]() |

I don't know how they got it there, but it's really cool. It's in a special deepwater exhibit, and they all sorts of odd creatures there. ![]() I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |
