Hagrid's got a 1/2 brother? That's what I get for just watching the movies, I guess. A real good book to read is called: "Magic Kingdom for sale; SOLD!", by Terry Brooks; as well as the rest of the series. I also miss reading the old Dragonlance series. But I am still a steadfast fan of Conan!

You know, come to think of it; I haven't finished a book in years. That must be the reason my vocabulary keeps slipping...

Lemony Snickett's alright if your in 3rd grade

Try again...if you did not at least hit senior high, you would not even get half of the content of Snickett's books.

Maybe I got the kids version by mistake, or maybe my university education got in the way....it was alright for the first few chapters but got too redundant afterwards. Not saying they were bad just saying they didn't have the added bit of book magic that some have....sometimes the order which you meet books makes a difference. I don't like the LOTR books because I'd read david eddings belgariad first *shrug*

I think Professor Snape will turn out to be a vampire. Dumbledore gives all sorts of wizarding outcasts jobs at Hogworths. Did the author state that a major character was going to die?

oooo ooooo oooo, I like the idea that Sirius Black might still be alive, how could I have missed that thought? Now that is a great thought!!!

Could it possibly be Malfoy who gets knocked off? Or maybe his father? I like that idea!!! Can't stand either of them myself

Well, my copy and Leslie's copy are on order...Yippee!!!

Now as for other good juvenile literature? I love The Giver by Lois Lowry...it is an awsome book and a must read!!! James Patterson's newest book santaKid is wonderful also, though it does fit into children's lit...I was able to get a copy of it signed...Let's see what else do I like to read??? Any Gary Paulsen are good, ok not all, I like his adventure type Hatchet is a good example of them, also NightJohn and Sarny are wonderful...Those are just a few of my favorites...I'm sure I could go on forever, Children and Adolescent's Literature was my main focus in the Reading department of Education...Ohh Ohh, one more, I swear just one more...Too Many Tamales absolutely wonderful!!!! Here's to reading...Heidi

ps...how do we underline? ie what is the secret code?

Ohhhh NOT Snape.. I love his character...all dark and troubled but underneath trying to do that he believes is right. If they were going to kill someone I could see it being one of Ron's parents or Prof. McGonickle (sp?).

Is this going to be the last book? Has anyone heard about a 7th?

*McGonagall heh.... I preordered the book yesterday... And, yeah, it is time to re-read them all.. for the third time. I can't quite figure out who is going to die in the 6th book, Maybe McGonagall or Dumbledore; but I am pretty sure Harry is going to die in the 7th book. <shrugs>

Harry's been losing father figures and male role models all along - his father dies, Hagrid goes (temporarily or not) to Azkaban, Lupin is forced out, Cedric dies, Sirius dies ...
So Lupin, Hagrid, and Dumbledore are next on the chopping block IMO - Hagrid in this book, Dumbledore in the seventh (since Harry can't really triumph with the super-wizard helping out, and she keeps going on and on about his age), Lupin could go either way.

Agree with the recs of Dark Materials and _Jacob Have I Loved_ - the latter's a bit of a kids' book so less wonderful to me of late, but the former are absolutely enchanting.

Anyone else read/ing Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell? It's - WOW. Definitely not a kids' book (not that it's innappropriate - entirely the opposite), it's got an incredible mastery of tone and a story you can't stop thinking about.

Kinda with Babel on Lemony Snicket - amusing enough for about 50 pages, and then it's rather "OK, I get it: two-dimensional kids doing somewhat interesting things in amusingly horrible situation." On the whole I'd rather donate my $8 to actual orphans. My kid sister liked them, though. And the movie was pretty good.

Tom Dietz writes a good fantasy, as does Chas deLint. And great for the teen/pre-teen set is Susan Cooper's "Dark is Rising" series.

Ohhh, i loved the Dark is Rising books, it was light reading, but i couldn't put it down!

Also quite enjoyed the Earthsea series, and the Witches of Eileanan series.

I'm about to start on the Rhiannon's Ride series, hopefully they will be just as good.

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned the Wheel of Time yet...

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

LOL Calla, I was just going to metion "The Wheel of Time". Large books, lots of reading, and still not completed. Of course, IMO, after 8th or 9th book, it starts to drag. No real twist to it, that makes it much different than the last few. Basically each book now, just kills off one more bad guy, trying to get to the final bad guy, or the dark one, lol.

But my fav is "The Sword of Truth" series, with the first book, "The Wizards First Rule". 7 books long right now. Each book has its own individual thing that is going on. Just pics up in the story, from where the last one left off. Can't wait for the next one.

Yes! Love the Sword of Truth books, although he's also dragging a bit lately.
They're great books, but the one thing that really ought to be edited out at this point is his list in the first chapter or so of each where he lists all the magic women he's met. In the course of introducing someone, Goodkind always feels the need to basically list every female character. And at this point, there are a lot. It's getting quite funny.
Naked Empire was a bit silly plotwise but the characters are still so engrossing I cared very little, and the early books are absolutely wonderful.

Any comments on the 'Chronicles of Narnia', at least for an 11 year old advanced reader? He's read all the HP books without problems, didn't show an interest in 'The Hobbit', so I thought I'd try something new.

Hey Theresa, how about getting him hooked on the Dragonlance series? Start him off with either 'The Legend of Huma', or to start a series...'The Dragons of Autumn Twilight'. Really good series: best authors in the series IMHO are...Richard A Knack(sp?), Margaret Weiss&Tracy Hickman.

Man, I can't believe no one has read 'Magic Kingdom For Sale: Sold!'; that's the start of a good series, by Terry Brooks!

11's a bit past Narnia, I think. Nice books (although I wish someone had warned me they were coded to convert me when I read them as a kid!- didn't work though, I thought Aslan (the lion) represented the Queen of England for years. ) but a bit younger than that. Which isn't to say they aren't worth a reread even by adults but I wouldn't buy the whole set just in case.

Andre Norton is one of my favorite science fiction and fantasy writers. Her earlier works featured teenage male protagonists, and she really caused a stir when she had one of the first female protagonists in a novel at a time when publishers thought all writers and readers of science fiction were male.

No Neville didn't die in book 5...Padfoot, the prisoner of azkaban, the godfather of Harry, heck, Leslie and I can't think of his actual name....I don't think Neville will die in this coming one...maybe Hagrid 1/2 brother? Who knows I can't wait to read it, and yes camping out was fun...They had all sorts of things going on...making magic wands, dressing up, it was great fun...can't wait!!!
