just today, i adopted a sailfin molly, a platy, and a dwarf gourami... their original owner no longer wanted to own fish, and even though it kinda saddens me, i see it as a responsible move on the owner's part in not flushing a live animal but rather, finding it a better home.

in the past couple of years, i've taken in so many fish, all of which are currenty living together in my 20 gallon. It's amazing how big they've gotten too.

someone should open a humane society dedicated to fish. wouldn't that be cool?

yep, it seems I am known around here as the betta lady. I get bettas given to me by my daughter's friends who aren't taking care of them, by strangers from our local aquarium society... that is why I am up to 29 bettas. I even have had some given to me to nurse back to health and then educated the owners on proper care. I do try to find good homes for them put I am kind of picky who they go too.

Well, I know what to do now if I become a business tycoon with a few hundred million in the bank. Set up a fish charity. Alongside some of my other pet causes (pardon the pun!). Only trouble is, such a venture would need a LOT of money, because some of the fish species that tend to be dumped include huge things such as Redtail Catfish, and housing them properly requires a colossal aquarium.

Still, I could possibly recoup some of the costs by making the facility a full-blown public aquarium. And posting big posters everywhere on responsible fish care to remind everyone what to do and what not to do.

Mind you, the building I'd need for a venture like that would be something else. Something the size of Liverpool's Anglican cathedral. Which, if anyone hasn't seen it, is a veritable mountain of sandstone. Some statistics can be found here:

Liverpool Anglican Cathedral Stats

The tower is 331 feet high. Think how many aquaria you could fit in that space

A building that size would probably be needed if I was to take on Redtail Cats and Adonis Plecs on a regular basis.

I rescued my nieces beautiful betta, Ruby, after she just didn't have time to do his water changes and care for him. His fins disintegrated so bad I didn't know if he would come back. But, he has and is now a happy resident of my home. His fins have kinks where the old meets the new and hopefully in time, they will look as beautiful as they once were.

My very first rescue came from my then, 9 year old nephew's defunct school science project - you know, the one where the teacher has all the kids create an "eco-system" with a pop bottle and a plant at the top . They put an apple snail in the bottle right at the outset, with a guppy and a plant. I didn't realize he had it, much less that his guppy had given birth and ate all but one, then died. With its dead mother and a very dead snail in a soda bottle and yellow plant, came one little survivor.

My nephew looked at me and said, "I think we should do something". Mother was reduced to a blob at the bottom so I can't imagine what the ammonia was between snail and blob-mom.

I took "Buddy" out - all 1/4 inch of him - and quarantined him in a betta hex - all I had at the time. I changed the water twice daily until he was big enough to handle a 3 gallon Eclipse system. After 2 months in there, I moved him to my 20 gallon long where he graces my tank with his gracious color and shape. That was 2.5 years ago. He is an endler's sized guppy and his colors get brilliant at different times of the day. He is one of my favorite fish. Not wanting millions of guppies and noting his need for a companion, I bought a green cobra male I dubbed, "Cobra". Buddy and Cobra are inseparable. They practice mating poses all day long. I know Cobra will have a shorter lifespan being a fancy and he is slowing down big-time after nearly 2.5 years. But, he brightens up whenever Buddy comes by making those poses at him.

I wish teachers wouldn't do these science projects - they obviously don't know what they are doing when they put a snail in a container that has no algae or other food source. It starved to death over several weeks.

I've taken in fish from a neighbor who was moving and couldn't keep them... she had a couple CAEs, three "berry tetras" (dyed) and a dyed Indian glassfish. (I think that's it...)

I rescued 4 Zebra Danio's from a young lady in my street, who was going to uni down south and couldn't keep her tank going as no one to look after it......as her mum never that interested in it...just happen to see my fishtank light on in the front lounge and knocked on the door. Two of the 4 Danios had kinked spines... asked what food they were eating and it was .. goldfish flakes???

They lived a happy 4-5 months in my community tank until they passed on!!! Bless em

Rescued a betta a few weeks ago. Still trying to figure out if it's a male or female - though it's been doing an awful lot of flaring lately so it may be a male... but on the other hand it has short fins like a female... ANYWAY, I went to my LFS and it was sitting there in a little plastic baggie, hanging off of the shelf out front. I mean, the bag was half way off the shelf, I'm amazed it didn't fall and break completely... it was almost hearbreaking to see the poor thing like that. And now he/she lives in a 46 gallon planted tank, with no fear of falling off of a shelf

Yes
*points to pond taking up a large corner of her living room*

It's some sort of cultural thing to put a goldfish in a bowl as part of some new years (march) tradition. I rescued 3 from my boss 3 years ago, only one managed to make it. I fear I'll have another to rescue this year (past two years I got lucky and didnt have to abduct them).
I just wish I had a bigger living room so I could have a bigger pond. That or outdoor electricity .

i have rescued a rainbow shark, and 3 zebra danios (he did have 5), 3 sword tails, male guppy, these were the only survivers from my ex's 10 gallon he did have 3 neons, 2 albino corys, 1 blue gourami, a male betta, a female betta

so... *counts up the inches of fish* 40 GALLONS i saved all i could and now all i have are the zebra danios, i took the shark to a family owned fish store, all the swords died , the guppy died in the pond, yea, and of the zebra danios there is a male long fin and 2 female normals, and one of the females has a missing gill cover but they love the 29 gallon now much better than an over stocked 10 gallon covered with BGA and rotting fish on the bottom, not to mention the tank haddent been cleaned in...months *shudders*
