Hi Kelly, welcome to FP!

Here's a link to a poll that was recently on the site concerning some of the members tanks.

http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/The%20Recovery%20Room/56824.html

You may want to reconsider placing the goldfish in a five gallon tank as they will get way too large for it. However there are many other smaller fish that you could place in there and if you go over the forums here you will find many posts concerning this. Good luck.

Hi everyone! I am new here, just registered today. I stumbled on this site when I was searching the web on fish. I really like this place! What size of tanks do you all have and what kind of fish? I have a 10 tank with guppies, a mini-tank with baby guppies, and a 5 gallon tank that I am going to get a couple small goldfish for. I am saving my money to buy a 55 gallon tank.

When kept in a small tank, goldfish tend to not get any bigger than a few inches. Many owners do not realize that this is a bad thing. The reason the growing stops is because they are stunting, a process where the organs continue to grow, but the body does not. Chances are your goldies wont get anywhere near their potential size in a 5 gal, and they wont live out their full lifespan either. Not only are they huge fish, theyre poop machines too. If youre going to move them, do it soon.

In my 5g tank, I have 2 SMALL goldfish, and they are very happy in it. They are not too big for it, they are only about 2 inches long. I can always move them to a bigger tank when they get older

Welcome Kelly!

I also would like to suggest bettas for your five gal. Goldfish are lovely, but they get huge. There are also many other options for your five gallon.

killifish
guppies
endlers
female bettas
ADF
Sparkling gouramis
Cherry Barbs
Dwarf puffer
A male betta
Shrimp
Apple snails

I might be getting a bigger tank for the goldfish (once I get them). As for my 55 gallon tank I'm going to get, I was thinking about putting some of my guppies in it when they get older (not males and females together!) and then add some other peaceful tropical community fish, not sure which yet. Any suggestions?

As for the betta idea, I might go for it. You think I should get 3 females for the 5 gallon tank? I thought maybe 2 would be better, but I don't know.

This place is so cool, I have always wanted to find a message board where I can ask questions about fish!

Hey Kelly, Welcome to FP

I have about 9 active tanks (and a few small ones in drydock at the moment) but basically I keep bettas, axolotls, and a yabbie, and a few random tropicals

Is the 55 going to be a goldfish tank or do you have other plans for it?

May I suggest a trio of female bettas for your 5 gal, they would love that much space and be far better suited to the tank.

I have to admit, I do see the goldfish attraction. If they weren't such messpots, i'd have a few myself!

Welcome to FP Kelly. You're going to find this site really interesting & you can ask what you want & get a very good reply, as there are some experts here.
I just want to inform you, that Goldfish shouldn't be kept in a small 5Gal. tank. Goldfish need a big tanks & i'm really glad that you are saving up for a 55Gal. tank.
