those feces you claim they eat are called cecals, rabbits have two different types of feces. they eat cecals (often softer and more clumped together) because their stomaches could not digest or obtain the nutrients the first time around, they ingest them to get the nutrients they need.

the more they eat their cecals, the more it suggests that one is not providing a proper nutrient diet for them, so it has to be obtained elsewhere.

rabbits have very different digestive systems and this is only aspect as to why, it has no relation to cleanliness

The eating of caecotrophs by rabbits is a completely natural and normal part of their digestive process. All members of the genus Lepus do this. Often this is not seen, as the caecotrophs are consumed immediately when they are passed, usually at night. Give that a thought the next time you fancy kissing your rabbit on the smacker
It can be seen as a form of recycling, ensuring that none of the rabbits nutrients are wasted. I could go into more detail but I won't bore you!

I know that they make a "special kind" of feces, but I was just stating that it's gross.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

I'm so glad a ton of people here like rats! Whee! I run Take Two Rat Rescue out of my home (and pocket! ouch) in London Ontario.

Just another hint for all the rattie owners and to-be-owners. Rats need to be in same sex pairs or groups.

Rats are social, and no amount of human interaction can make up for another ratty to snuggle with at night.

That's good, if she's smaller she's probably younger, younger rats will normally get along better with older rats, when it comes to introducting them.

I hope that Darcy doesn't have any illness, it's best to quarinteen your rats for 3-4 weeks to make sure your current rats don't fall ill as well.

Did you bring Lily to the vet when she fell ill?

I don't remember what kind of cage do you have your rats in, how big is it, and what do you feed them?

Yeah, I can tell that Holly is much happier now that she has a new friend. Rats just arents happy when they are kept alone... i can tell such a difference in the way they act when they have a buddy with them !!!!!!

I'm so sorry zebra.
I know how much these guys get to you
The 6 rats we have bought all were in pine shavings in the 2 different pet stores when we bought them so I also fear of damage that has been done.

Good luck and I hope you find another special rattie

My poor Lily died today- i came home from school to find her in a corner lifeless . and i feel horrible knowing that all of this could have been avoided if i just got the aspen shavings when i got them. cause for like the first week i had them they were in cedar shavings. couldnt get 2 the pet shop til them 2 get aspen shavings. lily got a respitory thing and died 2day . makes me feel horrible. i think holly is going to be ok though- she is showing no signs of what lily did ( she got really skinny, rough looking fur, sneezing a lot, discharge). holly is still healthy looking, so thats good. i want 2 get another rattie- hopefully this time it will work out better. cause now i do have a pretty big bag of aspen shavings. Poor Holly- shes all alone now

Zebra: There is every chance that I might be, but if so I haven't been on there in ages, lol.
The one that I used to frequent and still check it at now and then is the Rat Rules! forum.

Make sure the newspaper you are using isn't toxic. Some of the inks are and some aren't.

I can't get away with newspaper, my boys are EXCEPTIONALLY stinky for rats, lol.

Scroll down to find out about Bumblefoot in Rats.

Some people do have problems with it, some don't. Some have even claimed to get the bumble foot on regular flooring.
Me personally, I like solid flooring and ramps cause it's just easier and quicker to clean!
