Just thought I'd introduce myself, since I'm new here and whatnot.
I'm a marine biology student that's been keeping fish since... well, since I knew what a fish was! In the past I've had every type of tank imaginable: from cichlid to reef to planted, but right now I'm living in tight quarters and all I have is a little thing- not sure how many gallons. Maybe two or three. It's a cube vase with a little palm filter, fake plants (yeah, I'm that lazy ) fluorescent lighting. I've got two dwarf frogs and a little female guppy that I got for free because she is sort of a runt: no color and tiny. However, since I brought her home she's actually developing an iridescent sheen, and she's got quite a spunky personality. Anyway, I just took a picture, I'll post it later when I'm not supposed to be writing a paper about the genus hippocampus...
Oh yeah, and I live in Alaska, hence the name... Hah hah...

Welcome to FP.com, and especially to another fellow student!

Are you an undergrad or a grad student? I'm a junior studying biology, with the intention of going possibly/probably going into fish research.

Hippocampus is cool, are you writing anything specific?

Undergrad...

The paper is mostly focusing on conservation, ways that we can help the impoverished far eastern farmers learn to aquaculture their own ponies for TCM rather than deplete wild stock. It's really a fascinating topic I'm just not feeling motivated at the moment.
I can't get the image to post, but here's the link to the pic: http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc220/XaatLovesSalmon/Picture1-1.png

looking forward to your tutorlidge.

I have been on this site for a couple of years, and have had fish for a long time, but from the sounds of it, you know far more than I do.

Welcome to FP world.

Welcome to FP Alaska! As for the tank it looks like a 1/2 to 1 gallon. I have a 2.5 gallon with that same filter on it so I am basing my guess on the size comparison.

Oh and as for posting pics in the threads its a Premium Member thing. Until you go premie you can only post the links. But its a great way to support this site and at 20 bucks a year US, its a great way to show your support and to help out the site!

Haha, perhaps. I can come off as a know it all sometimes, but don't let that deter you. I'm really quite fallable, just like everyone else.

Yeah, yeah, it's a big filter. It was the smallest one I could find at my LFS!
I like to "dream big"- the original plan for the tank was a rimless 20g tall (plus a 20g 'fugium) mangrove tank made with that "starfire" glass that's super high def, housing a pair of h. erectus... But I have neither the money to pay for it, the time to care for the ponies, or the freezer space for all that mysis! Also, I got a stream of rather rude letters from companies making aquariums, all saying either they wouldn't ship such a tank to me, or they'd charge me $1000 USD+ just for S&H. So it got downsized, desalinized, and fake planted! I still wish I could have seahorses, but frogs are pretty awesome- they come up and sit there, watching me do classwork. As I type this they are both sitting there, one on top of the other, watching me.

PPS, a good live plant to look into would also be marimo balls as they are small (get larger with age, but slowly) and are very cool looking and easy to care for...

Hey, brandeeno, thanks for the links! Yes, I do wish my tank was a little larger. I like to ones from Ikea, but they do not ship, period. Probably wise of them, really.
I am going to be down South for a week next month and there is a target where I am going. I will look for that large one (which they are saying they DO have at that store)- it would be perfect because I could have a nice deep bed for that bamboo we were talking about AND still have plenty of room for the frogs.

Yeah, I can't find measurements for this one: http://www.target.com/Clear-Geo-Vase-Large/dp/B000HZBP20/ref=sc_ri_1/601-8518294-0358567?
If I could tell how big it actually is, I'd ask someone to grab it for me next time they're in Target...
