Different altitudes make a big difference in the baking. From the looks of your cookies you need more flour. Try uping the measurement 1/4 C. at a time. Luck to you.

You can amazingly enough find "golden" syrup in the stats...it contains corn syrup but it looked to me to have a few other ingredients. The brand I found was Kings....I doubt it's the same "golden" syrup as in oz and nz, but it's the best we've got.

fan fan that pretty much looks exactly the same recipe that I used, I think my refusal to admit that they could be rolled is where I got into trouble....I'm still working on eating my last batch, but I'll give them another try ....even tim said the "hockey pucks" werent all that bad .

no, its an aussie product, the taste is quite different. corn syrup would do in a pinch, but the taste wont be authentic. Honey might be a better choice.

i made some yesterday my recipe is as follows-

1 cup of rolled oats
1 cup plain flour
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup coconut (desicated kind.. i think thats wat its called it isnt ground to powder more shredded.)
2 tablespoons of golden syrup
125 grams of butter (4 oz)
1/2 a teaspoon of bi carb soda
2 table spoons of boiling water.

METHOD-
Mix dry ingredients (except bi carb)
cut butter into small peices and put in bowl/jug with golden syrup and melt together.
(NOW THE TRICKY BIT) put the baking soda in a cup with the boiling water and quickly put into jug of butter/syrup and then quickly tip that into the dry ingredients (make a well in the center first) and stir in well.
once mixed together use your hands.. yes you get dirty its part of the aussie thing (and NZ cus they are part of the anzac legend too) roll the mix into balls about half to 2/3 of the sixe of ping pong balls and sprad evenly on a tray and slightly flatten them. i manage to fit 12 on a norm baking tray. then bake in an oven on 150-160 degrees celcius (sorry dont know farenheit) bake for 15-20 minutes check them regularly. when they start to brown nicely on top take them out and leave to cool on their tray. they will harden up in about 5 minutes. then they are right to go. if you get them still warm the centres are all cool and squishy.

P.s dont forget to grease the tray first as to stop them sticking.

family recipe this one (* thinks* im such a good cook....

yeah babel the tea-towel was what stopped me saying anything for so long! But there comes a point at which trans-tasman rivalry overwhelms politeness and I just have to blurt!

whetu!

Actually my topic title comes from a PSA that's running here which has an outcue of "because it takes a man to be a dad".... don't ask why it was running thru my head :%)....

Besides I thought the tea towel would be enough .

It's because you forgot what the NZ in Anzac stands for babel! Remember to say "kia ora" to your bikkies and it'll work much better

Did you use baking soda (bicarbonate) at all? The last time I made cookies that didn't rise/ran together a lot, the problem was there wasn't any baking soda or baking powder in them... because I forgot to put it in.

yeah, perhaps cut the butter slightly and possibly refridgerate your balls before baking them, to try to reduce that immediate spread.

*grabs honey nut cheerios*

Think it's cause I refused to roll them into a ball
Honestly I thought I'd end up with more on my hands than in the pan....and on a side note a whole stick of butter !

Keith is gouing to be better at troubleshooting than me, but um, at a guess, the slightly different ingredients make it slightly different...
