I woke up this morning to find my 6x2x2ft tank half empty.
I rushed to the 2 canister filters praying that it was one of them that had broken (remembering Garyroland's warnings) but no, my tank was leaking .

We also have a 4x2x2 with 2 oscars so we moved the oscars over to the 5x2x2 which has a mix of cichlids, we're soooo worried about what the oscars are going to do to the other cichlids in there but we have no other choice. I also put my 2 larger plecos in the cichlid tank as well but they seem to be fine.
Most of my other fish went into the 110 gal(4x2x2ft) tank and the smaller fish into another 4ft tank. The poor cories are quite cramped but hopefully they'll be ok, for a while at least.

My next thought was my filtration? They were all running dry for a couple of hours. 2 1500lt canisters, a AC 500 and an internal. Thankfully the 2 canisters and the AC survived and I only lost the internal so I'm grateful for that.

Now what to do with the leaking tank, it's not a crack, it's leaking along the bottom join as far as I can tell. The tank was second hand when I bought it and I wouldn't have a clue how long it was stored dry in a garage and I've had it running for about 16 months.
I don't think the fish can last the time it would take to get it fixed (none of us would be brave enough to attempt it) and the money it would probably cost to get it fixed comes close enough to me buying a brand new tank so I've opted for the new tank.
I'm now crossing my fingers and hoping that in the meantime I don't lose too many fish to stress
I am grateful because it could have been much worse, the tank could have had NO water when I found it.

I've written all of this as a warning about 2nd hand tanks and old silicone, I know many of you probably already knew this but maybe some don't.

*crosses fingers for my fishies to make it though all of this*

i prefer acrylic, although they get scratches which is pretty minimal compared to a massive leak

Aww. Hope it works out for you guys...leaky tanks are rough.

It's a very good thing you caught it before it was too late.

If I'm not mistaken, they sell special sensor things that you can put in the areas where a leak would be most evident, and if the tank does leak they'll go off. Gimme a couple hours and I'll find a link for ya, I know I saw it somewhere. GL

Sorry to hear of this. I'll give you a big hug on Saturday. In the meantime if there is ANYTHING we can do, just give us a bell. Keep in mind that I have a couple of 2 footers here with heaters/filter etc that I can bring down. One of these 2 footers is a complete stand/hood/light. If you need them, there is NO PROBLEMS in us bringing them down. Best wishes to little fishys.***Tiger

omg you actually got Justin working.]]]]]]]]]]]]

PS: If their is anything you need and need asap, I can come down earlier. I finish work at around 1pm. Just give Pete a bell and he will let me know. I will remember to take my mobile phone with me.

Is there an LFS nearby that you know and trust?

Maybe you can ask them to set up a boarding tank.

Dro & O, poor diggs was moaning and groaning last night about all the "work" he had to do and the "early" morning start the poor baby

If I'm not mistaken, they sell special sensor things that you can put in the areas where a leak would be most evident, and if the tank does leak they'll go off.
Something like that would give us piece of mind Ferret because my bf's tank (the 150gal cichlid tank) is a second hand tank that was sitting dry for a few months before he bought it as well and I'm horrified at the thought of something happening to it as well

Is there an LFS nearby that you know and trust?
I thought about that as well Troy but the LFS in our town has very small tanks plus they're not particularly clean either and our trusted LFS is about 30 minutes away and I think that would probably stress the poor fish out even more

The oscars haven't eaten any of diggler's cichlids yet although they may have chomped on a few of the baby brichardi and humphead cichlids and my big plec has a few marks on him but that may have come form "sucking" on the biggest oscar I caught him doing it this morning.
The only other fish that I can tell has suffered is one of my blue rams, it's not doing so well but the other 2 seem good, even colouring up for each other this morning and one of my pairs of angels is cleaning of an outlet pipe to spawn.

Thank you for the well wishes, I've passed them onto the fishies

Thanks for asking O yeah, they're still doing fine.

The new tank arrived today and hopefully I'll have it set up tomorrow if the carpet is dry by then that is
Would you believe the oscars are totally loving it where they are so we may be leaving them there (in diggs 150gal tank)and moving the smaller cichlids into the 110gal after I move my fish out of there. LOL it's lucky the cories don't mind being so close because all 80 of them are pretty squished in there.

I'll be doing what I did originally as in filling it up, clearing it up, double dosing with NIC, waiting for it to get to the right temp and then checking PH. Once it all matches I'll put all the fishies in and just keep checking it every day or so. It never spiked as such last time so I really don't expect it to this time either.

And a big thank you again to TigerAngel for helping today with the tank, as usual in my place the girls did most of the heavy work

I took some pics this morning.
As you can see the tank's quite a mess but I really didn't want to shift it around and stress them out even more

The seal on this tank was totally horrifying after looking at it properly
