although during winter we get VERY blue skies...it's just haze that makes our sky seem "gray"

THAT IS LOVELY!

i tried to convince Jerry we needed a house last night, and he pointed out that they cost a bit more down here... so we are still stuck renting

I do agree tho, your stuff will look much better

Fishtanks in the garage are ok, you just have to have an airpump outside so there is continuous fresh air coming into the tank. The escaping air will not allow any carbon monoxide in.

Yeah, a unit is basically an apartment, or a flat. I'd prefer to say apartment though, flat makes me think of a little brick box with people stacked on top of each other! Which was mostly what was available in my price range - another reason I'm so happy to have got this place.

Babelfish - I don't think any appliances come with the place, except an air conditioner and the oven/stove. I know the air conditioner is okay, because my partner is the one who serviced it - a while ago and without any clue that he would actually own the place one day ! He will check the oven as well, he is an electrician and can at least see that the fittings are all okay. Other than that, we have our own washing machine, fridge etc. that are all working fine.

Daniel - the fishies will have top spot in the living room I think . There's room in the garage for a fish room, but I'm starting to think it's not a good idea - carbon monoxide and fish tanks probably don't mix!

Here are a few pics of the place. Of course, I think it'll look a lot better with my furniture and fish tanks .

It's the one on the left.

...I bought a unit on the weekend.

Well, I mean I found a unit for which I will take out a terribly scary mortgage, and one day, after many years, will own . Hey, it's way better than paying rent though, and I'll get to do all those little things, like painting the walls and putting up shelves and stuff that I've never been able to do in my rental homes! And of course, there's the investment factor as well . It's a little frightening because it happened so quickly, we only started seriously considering it two weeks ago, but we looked at this place and went 'Yep'. It was well-priced compared to other places on the market, it's been nicely renovated, there's a large courtyard that our cat will enjoy and we're going to be making an application to City Council to build a big deck off the front which will give us city views.

We don't get to move in until December, because there are tenants in there with a lease until then (I'm going to be a landlord at 21 ), but we don't mind too much because we do love the house we're living in now and it'll be nice to spend the next couple of months enjoying the space while we have it.

Anyway, just had to share!

Congrats just beginning welcome to the fun ( ) of home ownership...reading thru your post reminded me of all the joy there really is in owning your own place (I was checking for sale's in my community and it looks that after less than two years my place is worth $30,000 more than when I bought it).

Just a tip (and I'm not trying to be a killjoy here )...but check the appliances over, depending on how old they are they might need to be replaced soon, and be sure to consider that a factor. Three weeks ago my washer went out, @first I thought it would only cost $700 to replace it, turns out I need to spend $2,200+. Heres to hoping nothing else goes out for a month .

*Hands just beginning the Ikea catalog, and a paint ideas book*

Cool! Good luck JB!

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.
