I'm a writer, as some of you may or may not know. I've had a few pieces published before, in literary journals and magazines and such, but I've just found out that one of my short stories is going to be published in a book - an anthology of, supposedly, the best young writers in Brisbane. Woohoo!

The funny thing is, I've had stories that I've been working on for years that I've never gotten published. This one, I wrote in an hour one morning a few weeks ago. Go figure!

Yeah, funny how things turn out that way.

Congratulations on the publication.

hey, not all creations take hours/days/weeks/months to make them good. there was a song in the 1960's "soldier boy" which was written and recorded literally in the last five minutes of studio time and became a #1 hit. congratulations on publication

Perhaps this is proof that you think too much

Well done JB!

Thanks guys...

I'm not sure what the title of the whole book will be yet, but I'll let you all know. The title of my story is 'Sweeping Leaves'.

I don't really write any particular style or genre. The last big piece I wrote was about a young married couple who are involved in a car crash. The husband is in a coma for 12 years, and the wife has to live all those years in limbo, unable to grieve and move on because he's not actually dead, basically she just has to wait for him instead of living her life. The piece that is getting published is about the old woman who lives next door to me, who spends all day, every day, sweeping leaves off her driveway. From my conversations with her, she is very lonely, everyone she's ever loved is dead and to me, sweeping leaves all day is just a way of passing time until she dies.

Actually I don't write very much at all lately, even though I started my degree because I wanted to write fiction, I got sidetracked by magazine publishing and editing and my focus has been on that ever since. I've also been writing a lot of non-fiction, magazine articles and such. But it always feels really good to write fiction again, it feels familiar and warm and homely, because I've been doing it since I was six years old. So I enjoyed writing this story, and I'm glad other people will be reading it (which is something new for me, because I have a lot of trouble showing my work to anyone - something I had to deal with all through my degree!)

i used to edit a poetry magazine, and i was back in oxford this week so went to the launch of their new issue. i got to hobnobbing and now i'm getting a poem published in The Liberal, which is a fairly high profile new british politics/culture/poetry magazine. i'm going to be in the same issue as Noam Chomsky. bonus.
a girl who started up the magazine i used to edit also just had her first book of poems published. it must be a crazy great feeling.
