I seem to recall someone recommending to me a fish store in King of Prussia, and since there's nothing around here (Petco, a 20 minute walk, has only bettas and feeder comets, and literally one kind - one kind! - of freeze-dried food. Nothing frozen. Argh), I'd love to know what/where it is. I'm having little luck with Switchboard.com, which seems to shunt things into weird categories and makes up addresses for them that don't exist.
Will also take suggestions of good Philly stores, thanks.
And, yes, I know about That Fish Place, but it's a bit farther off and once I get off the train who knows if I can get there on foot or not ... probably not!

I live in Philly, and there are a bunch of LFS/LPS depending on which part of the city you want to go. The best I've found is the Hidden Reef in the northeast. I know of 2 in South Philly and 2 just outside Philly in Bucks County. There are also various Petco/Petsplus/Petsmart stores. Let me know what's most convenient and I'll try to recommend something.

Problem is I have no real idea what's convenient! Um, there are train stops at: Market St. & 30th, 16th and JFK, and Market St. between 10th and 12th. Plus, if these are useful for anything, Ardmore (Anderson and Station Avs), Wynnewood (East Wynnewood and Penn Rds), Narberth (Narberth and Haverford Avs), Merion (Hazelhurst and Idris Rds), Overbrook (63rd st and City Av), Temple U (Berks St between 9th and 10th), and North Broad St (near Lehigh Ave), plus a bunch farther out towards Thorndale. Of course, extra points if you know of any within walking distance of Bryn Mawr College!
HTH? Thanks very much! Does Hidden Reef have FW?

I know there are at least 1 or 2 in center city, not sure where though. The Hidden Reef has both FW and SW, and very reasonable prices. They also have a web site here. I could try and locate the center city fish stores if you like. Have you tried the yellow pages?

I wish I could find the yellow pages! Thanks for your help, I'll try and mapquest myself to Hidden Reef for now - hopefully it will be so good I won't need to check out any others.

EDIT: Urgh, three buses, and about 3 hours to get there according to SEPTA.com.

I found these on Superpages.com. I've never been to these stores but they're probably easieer to get to.

Aquarium City Centers
740 South 4th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147
(215) 923-8519

World Wide Aquarium & Pets
7043 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19128
(215) 482-8700

There are also 2 in South Philly. Zoos Petstore at Front and Oregon, and Monster Pets (I think) near the Target off of Delaware Ave. Sorry I don't have exact addresses, but I've been to both of these stores and they seem ok.

HTH

Thanks again! With the proliferation of online yellow-pages-type databases, no wonder none of them can get it straight ... Superpages, that one goes in the bookmarks.
I'll check out the travel to those shops and see how it looks, thanks.

Looks like I can definitely get to Hidden Reef, Aquarium City Centers, and maybe the Zoo one if I really want a walk. Inspires me to figure out the bus system, though! Especially as SEPTA's "plan my trip" feature always seems to exclude the trains altogether, the stupid thing. (It seems to believe that walking an hour between bus stops to get into the city from Bryn Mawr is preferable to getting on a train five minutes from campus and taking a 20-minute ride, *then* walking or finding a bus. Oy)

Why not take the train into the city then use "plan my trip" from there? Good luck in your quest...

I'll second a trip to World Wide. I've been to the location in Upper Darby, and always find something different there. I used to frequent northern Delaware, and found a number of small stores there that sometimes had some interesting things. Good luck in your quest!

Joe Fishy, what stores in northern DE would you recommend? I work in New Castle and could check out a few on my way home.

In Delaware, you could try Fishman, with 2 locations (Kirkwood Hwy and Rte 202-on the Southern side). There's Petsmart off of Naamans, one of their better locations, and Petco in Christiana mall. I used to like Tulls, in Prices Corner (Old Capitol Trail, behind Kirkwood Hwy), but the owner was robbed and shot (he subsequently died) in his store back in April. Hopefully the store is still open, as his wife vowed to keep it going, but I don't know the current status. Closeby on the other side of Kirkwood is Williams Greenbank. Two more are Pet Village (off of Marsh Rd in N Wilmington), and Just Fish (at Fox Run Plaza near 40 & 72). There's more in Delaware County across the border but I'll save that for another post! Happy fish shopping!
