I'm going to new york city for the day with my mom tomorrow, and she suggested I research places where we could look at fish since she knows I'm totally obsessed, and we want to start the adventure of a reef tank together. Problem is, I don't know of any! and I tried googling it, but I kept on getting places where the fish are already filleted. Can anyone help??? Thanks in advance, I mean, (for ppl who cant drive) how many times do your parents actually volunteer to randomly take you fish shopping? Mine typically dont...usually requires a bit of convincing.

--Note to self, try not to bring home a betta...

Hehe! Yay, you're visiting NYC!

My favorite LFS (well, actually, the only good one in the city) is a place called New World Aquarium. It is on 38th street between 2nd and 3rd ave. Nice fish selection, the people know what they are talking about.

Do you need subway directions?

OK, as for subway directions...

Take the 4,5,or 6 train to 42nd street (Grand Central station). Then, just walk south to 38th street, then walk east until you see it. It will be on the south side of the street.

As for anything else, nope...no real good stores. Anything good closed down. This is the only store I buy fish from. I wish more would open up! If you have the chance, go to the New York Aquarium in Coney Island. I volunteer there, its a great place to spend the afternoon.

Also, here is the website of the LFS:

Thanks soluble! I'm putting it on my to-do list. If you go there tomorrow and see a 15 year old walking with a lady who says "okay, why don't you have this fish in your tank?" then thats me and my mom. :%) She thinks every pretty fish should be in my tank...little does she know about the rules of stocking...

Well I'm back! the trip was lots of fun, the good news.. I saw 42nd street on broadway which was amazing, ate yummy food, etc. and I checked out that fish store!!! Thanks soluble!!! Boy was I impressed, I wouldn't expect to find some tanks that nice in the middle of manhattan, the place is so hidden! It was very hard not to take home some shellies as I'm having trouble finding around here. THere were some beatiful reef tanks too, my only complaint would be the discus didn't look all too happy. But I did see the biggest leopard cories EVER. Okay now for the dissapointing news, I went to a chinese restaurent for dinner, and right when I walked in there was this gimundo fish tank right...5'x2'x2'...the problem, it was home to 11 KOI...one was 6", two were 1'6", and the rest were all 1' give or take. That made me VERY angry...everybody knows koi belong in ponds that are way over 1000 gallons.]:|]:|]:| or so I thought. A lot of them had deformities too, and the tank had like no decor, it didn't even look good. SOMEBODY HELP ME FROM GOING INSANE...oh wait, too late.

Awsome I know, it's kind of hidden, and then you walk in, and hit by rows of fishtanks. Sounds like you had fun.
