I mena that linux can have catastrophic failures - the bluescreen, even though it does not necessarily express them via a blue screen (if you see what I mean, it can still fail at that level, just without the physically blue screen)

i've watched a linux install self-destruct, it's even elss pretty than watching windows do it!

what are you doing to linux that you get a bluescreen?? that is supposed to only be a windows phenomenon.

I would like to use Linux in a dual boot, but fiding drivers for my hardware would be a nightmare. From what I can tell, I would lose sound, lose my keyboard, graphics tablet and joystick. That basically kills all my input options (i dont use a mouse cos of RSI)

i dont like the way windows does too much, and often not very well. But at the same time, I like the fact I dont have to recompile the kernal every time i want to change hardware. I have pretty much come to an arrangement with windows about how i like it and what i like for it to do. I do wish it wouldnt bluescreen, but Linux does that too, and at least with Windows, you will never get an "all your base are belong to us" exception, or "fifi has been violated" or "save yourself has terminated unexpectedly" error messages. And before you ask, I've seen all of those on the uni Linux installs!

Im not blaming windows for anything, i just said that windows is getting fustrating to use with or without the internet interference. I am very sure im not the only one in this world who has been fustrated by windows lack of efforts to fix their flaws. Don't get me wrong I have been using windows for 10 years now. im only just looking for another 'better' product in the marketplace.

my own win xp pro edition has NEVER locked up in the 4 or so years i've been using it. but yet i would still recommend linux over windows because linux is still a better OS. if a security flaw is discovered in linux, it is usually patched by the end of the week. if a security flaw is discovered in windows, it is usually allowed to cause untold thousands and/or millions of dollars in lost business before microsoft gets around to fixing it. for people who care about these kinds of things, the choice is very obvious

my windows XP pro corporate edition has locked up on me once in the 3-4 years i've been using it, and it wasn't even windows' fault, it was a dying video card.

Install it properly, set it up properly, use common sense and it'll run as predictable as the sun rises and sets.

Viruses and spyware are easily avoidable with afforementioned common sense, so don't blame your instability issues on the o/s.

I just ordered up parts for a new computer i'm building and have XP Pro 64 bit coming to run it. I expect it to be just as stable as my current machine.

i'd bet most schools and some business run windows server. i know first hand about business, as i work for a major tech company, and all of our midrange servers and inhouse servers are all windows server. we do have some unix, but their few and far and also disappearing quickly.

as far as schools, i have a brother-in-law that works with a few school districts and they also run windows based servers. unix and linux is very nice and secure. but people are switching more to windows based due to how simplier it can be loaded and trained on.

EricM,

maybe 90% of the world's personal computers run on Windows, but check your school or company; I bet you the server is running on Unix; Linux' big sister.

(Linux is the free ware version...)

one suggestion for anybody who wants to try linux and cant really afford a 2nd pc to play with, is to try a microsoft product called VirtualPC. it allows for a virtual computer running under your main OS. and you can install any OS under this program and will run great. its not cheap. but if you can find it cheap or any kind of demo or whatever. its worth it.

i only use Windows 2000 pro on all my pc's and any that i build. but i'm playing with linux ONLY to run a my server.

and the only reason a vast majority of the worlds pcs use it. its cause if their bought in the stores. thats the only option you have is XP or rarely 2000. only way you can get linux is to either build your own, or take the pc you just bought new and install linux over it.... taking in the fact you know what your doing.

using windows cause 90% of the world uses it is no reason to use it, imho. that isn't really taking anything into consideration. sounds like you're only using it cause it's popular personally i would go with linux. there are many free alternatives to the most popular software titles, and they are almost all compatible with their expensive counterparts. plus it's not windows.

Even though windows has its problems.. go with windows since it supports a greater range of applications.. and maybe since over 90% of all computers have windows running on them .

the latest Linux releases look quite like windows and are mostly compatible with MS software.

I'm still trying to get my Linux to work, but it doesn't recognise my modem yet. (There's one disadvantage of Linux ...)
