I think the key to staying interested in the hobby is to find one or two things that you really like, and focus you're attention on them.

For me, it's corys. There are literally hundreds of species, and I am always looking for new ones and contaminants in the store. Even though it frustrates me, I kind of like the fact that C. similis (my favorite species) is so rare and I've never seen it in real life. It gives me something to hope for; the day when I finally see that beautiful blue cory on the availability list.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

I can't imagine not having my fish, I guess I'm one of the freaks...It's gotten so bad, I can't sleep unless I can hear the sound of my pumps running. It makes sleeping over anywhere, near impossible......Oh yes, I slept great...*scrubbing my dry itchy sleep needing eyes*

I am too losing interest in my fish. Im really thinking about taking down my 5.5 gallon tank and just keeping my 10g. tank w/ my clawed frogs. I just dont even want to mess with my fish anymore. I dont even wanna clean the tank, and thats bad for the fish . this has happened 2 me before, and i will take down the tank and then here in a month or 2 i will want to sit it back up with new fish .

Well Little C, you can't force an interest if it's just not there any more... who knows, some trigger might set you off again soon, or maybe many years down the track! Whatever you do, make sure you keep coming back to FP... I've been missing you recently

ive found that my interest has lost for the color n vividness of apperance n i shifted to the behavioural side of the fish selling off all my tetras n more common fish to get into cichlids n exotics that u jsut dont see very often, eels, puffers, n piranhas
the glimmer fades on all things bnut life is funny for its perfect cycles all it takes is one moment to realize how much something means or meant n itll all come back

well, since most of my fish are not living with me anymore, I have to say I've lost interest too

I like to think that whoever designed marine life was thinking of it as basically an entertainment medium. That would explain some of the things down there, some of the unearthly biological contraptions

That's a good point...even when I start feeling like that my Endler's breeding tank always cheers me up. For a long time that was my main focus. Now that I'm finally taking down those frustrating small tanks my new interest is in the more unusual gouramis I've been finding.

I'm with Cory - find some aspect of the hobby you couldn't possibly leave behind, and you'll be in it for a long time. For quite a lot of people, community tanks just won't sustain them - narrowing the focus like CA's done or choosing something with enough intelligence to fascinate, like, er, shelldwellers, is a good way to keep the energy up. And planning future tanks! That always gets me roaring back into it.
But there's nothing wrong with a break - perfect your 20, get some good photos, enter the aquascaping contest, realize how much you like planted tanks, set up a nano, or a larger one ... you'll see the bug probably hasn't left the building.

I don't know why, but lately I have been losing interest in the aquarium hobby. Today, I just gave some fish to the LFS and took down my biggest (38 gallon) tank and my 10 gallon tank. I cleaned them and they are now in storage in the basement. I think I will most likely sell them in the classified ads.

I decided to only keep my 20 gallon long planted tank because it is my favorite and is the least work. Now with school starting and all, I just don't have the time and don't have the desire to care for fish as much any more.

its natural for ur interest to fade n surge as u keep ur tanks. happened to me at least twice(the two times i sold my previous piranha shoals). but every time im about to shut the whole thing down. i look at my empty tank n think, "damn, i gotta get some fish in there!" i clean up the tank, set'er up nice n neat, cycle it out, n bam get me a new set of red bellies. for some people this hobby hits them hard n leaves them quick. for others the love can go for years, then bit by bit it loses its appeal. then theres people like me who binge n purge on the hobby. and of course there are the FREAKS who breath, eat, and sleep fish(yea, u know who u are)
no worries caesar, say u toss all ur tanks out tomorrow, ur still gonna come to this site. deal out ur knowledge when its needed, talk to the friends uve made here. and after awhile, low and behold, the aquarist bug ends up bitin again.

Sorry to hear that but I understand, especially about time.

With my job I have one weekend day off and one day during the week. I find myself spending a good part of my day off doing cleaning and maintenance. It was worse during the summer when I was working six days.

Two of my tanks-a 5g and a 5.5g-were frustrating me, just not stocking and looking how I wanted them to. I ended up taking one down. I also lost my oldest and absolutely most favorite betta...the next day I lost another and I haven't had the desire to replace them.

It happens. I've been losing intrest in my FW tanks, but I think thats because my SW tank consumes the majority of my time, and ALL of my money.
