fishyhelper288 Fish Guru Posts: 2161 Kudos: 1951 Votes: 137 Registered: 29-Feb-2004 | yup, the most recent rescue i tell yo people these days are SOO imature! i was in gym and we had somehting to the effect of a free day, so while the boys were off fooling around, i slumped against a wall, and just began to go into deep thought, when one of my schoolmates comes running in to the teacher telling her a bird had attacted her and that it was now lying on the ground....i was just too curious for my own good! so i waited a few minuets untill they were a ways out the door, before i casualy got up and walked a few meters behind them, i get there and eveybody is standing in a huge circle around the helpless little baby bird, a few boys attemted to step on him so i asked what was going on, stepped in and took it, while everyone around me is screeming for me to just let it die ofcourse anybody who knows me i would never do that! so i took the baby who was scared to death! and i stuck him in my coat bocket and took 20 minuets of my day to just find a box, the last stop was the nurses office and after i told her what had happened she took a moment to thuink, jumped up, ripped the tissues from the box and handed it to me lol so in went the bird, and then a plastic baggie with holes cut in it was slipped over, he was to have to be like that for a few hours, but i knew he was safe... i went to get the bird at 2:00 and was told that he had many visitors..all or most of them wanted to take him and flush him so i stuck him in my locker and locked it for the first time.... he is now doing much better in a tall cage sitting in a box safe from shoes and toilets. Oh, and i did not name him..the girl he "attacked" (which actualy he was falling from the roof and she broke his fall) now while i was getting picked on all day for having a heart, i know i wont live this down untill summer...but i dont care, stleast the bird is safe pics comming soon (ps..it should be only a couple days before he regains his strength and can fly away ) |

longhairedgit Fish Guru Lord of the Beasts Posts: 2502 Kudos: 1778 Votes: 29 Registered: 21-Aug-2005 | As someone who has been in animal rescue for many years I consider what you did to be the only right and honourable thing to do. If you need any tips on getting it well and getting it ready for release just let me know.( trust me you might get attached, but release really is the best thing when hes well enough)Its probably better not to give it a name. Its sounds like your school is full of some very stupid, ignorant and kill crazy people. Shame the ol git wasnt in attendance, I have methods for dealing with such people Well done you for flying with the angels there! |

fishyhelper288 Fish Guru Posts: 2161 Kudos: 1951 Votes: 137 Registered: 29-Feb-2004 | thank you yea, this is a VERY country area in newyork where the guys brag about the deer they skinned, or how many times they had to hit an animal in a trap, or the fact that they caught somehting and just left it there to die i cant stand people here, people keep saying how i "killed" the bird and its a good thing there is only 3 more days of school then i dont have to deal withthem untill next year, and by that time they will be worried with other things..i hope.. i even got evicted from my seat at lunch if you can believe it but i just smile at them .. mainly becasue i think their ignorance is amusing and because they hate i that nothing they say can bug me but i am going to get some vitamins that go in baby bird food and other things to get prepaired for the next flow of babys..hopefully none that a cat has already gotten to, if that happens then i cant afford to take it to a vet for antibiotics... i do have one question though, how old do you have to be to get a permit? and what do you have to do to get one? i would enjoy this much more if caring for orphans was legal without a permit, but i do know that this world would be filled with pet squirrels if permits dident excist |

longhairedgit Fish Guru Lord of the Beasts Posts: 2502 Kudos: 1778 Votes: 29 Registered: 21-Aug-2005 | I doubt anyone will notice if you need a license or not for one bird, and the few weeks it will take to see it throught to a releasable age, you can always call your local authority, and if youre worried about the legality of keeping the animal for recovery, you should be able to find an animal rescue service in the phone book who can raise it for you. Im like most animal rescuers, I dont mind who rescues an animal as long as they do it right, and that means not habituating it to human company, and releasing it in the right area when the time is due. To this end it is helpful to pass the bird on to someone who has outdoor acclimation cages. Just because you raise a bird doesnt mean you become mom, a lot of wild birds retain all their natural instincts even when raised by humans and captivity can be a terrible thing for them. Wild animals rarely if ever make good pets, and when youve seen the heartbreaking psychosis and stereotypical behaviour once, you'll never wish to see it again or be the cause of it. Make sure you do the right thing, and get it ready for the wild, or pass it on to someone who can. |

superlion Mega Fish Posts: 1246 Kudos: 673 Votes: 339 Registered: 27-Sep-2003 | New York Bureau of Wildlife These are the people you should contact. (you said New York, correct?) Apparently they do have rehabilitation centers, where people have everything they need to rehab animals. They would know about licensing as well. ><> |

fishyhelper288 Fish Guru Posts: 2161 Kudos: 1951 Votes: 137 Registered: 29-Feb-2004 | theres noone around here willing to do a pickup but i do have outside cages, i biut it special for the little red squirrel i cared for, a week in that cage and she still loved to play with my hand, but she was ready to be free he mother came back this yer, i htink its her mother, this is her territory so it very well could be hunny, but i have apotted aorund 5 new red squirrly pups running around soo cute but the flight cage will be getting bigger this year, i could only afford to do about half last yer, but this summer i can hopefully install a real good door thats easy to get into for me, and so its longer and i can hang it rightfully from a tree it would also make a great play cage for my rats on those warm summer days lots of running room lol (around 8ft+ tall which will be long, and around 3-4 ft wide, which will be tall ) |
