IE does need to be there, but you can set Firefox as your default, so you will hardly ever see Explorer.

You can remove outlook in the Add/Remove Programs section I think.

The fairly simple way to dodge most of the virii out there is to switch over to http://www.linux.org. Most of the people on this thread have already sold you on software that's already included in most mainstream distro's, so you're half way there already! The one big thing missing is your AV solution, and to that, I say, lose the target and you won't get shot at!

Plus, there aren't a lot of free anti-virus packages out there that are worth the time and effort of getting them to work around the remnants of whatever you had before.

And no, I'm not a linux zealot.. I just play one at work..

Well I have made my decision.

I have chosen Avant as my browser - which is very nice.

I have chosen Mozilla Thunderbird for my email client.

Everything is all good at the moment. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the help and suggestions. I didn't however manage to stop Firefox from dialing once I open the program.

i assume you're on dialup? you should be able to change that setting in internet options. start->control panel->internet options->connections make sure it's not set to automatically dial the default connection.

i would say go with thunderbird, but if the other one has something you like about it, then stick with that

OK then. Yeh Mozilla looks lots like Netscape. Not into that tho. Where as I like the Firefox but like Avant better as I like the loading percentage part at the bottom of the page.

mozilla is the base browser, firefox is better though. there are plenty of extensions for firefox that make it superior to just about anything out there, including the adblocker extension

thunderbird is a nice program, the only thing i don't like about it is that it looks kind of blocky. but functionality-wise it is great

OK I have narrowed it down to:

BROWSERS:

Firefox OR Avant (I am leaning towards the latter)

Now does anyone have any hassels or problems with either??

EMAIL:

Foxmail but am looking at the Thunderbird as well.

Anyone have any problems with either of these???

I use Netscape 7.1 as my internet browser, though I do use Internet Explorer on the rare occasion I run across something that only runs in IE (unfortunately, there are still sites like that).

OK so there is another topic on Virus scanners and also Ad-ware and Spyware.

I would like to know what other programs people use appart from Microsoft based stuff.

I am looking at not using Internet Explorer and am looking at Mozilla. The whole package that included the email client as well.

What do other people use for internet browsing, E-mail, Ad-ware, Spyware, Anti-Virus

(Keep in mind - FREE software)

I currently use Ad-aware & Spy-bot on all systems and then PC-Cillan on one machine, AVG-free edition on another and I have just got a laptop with Norton Internet Security.

for music....I like iTunes (WAY better than Windows Media Player) and Limewire (filesharing basically)....

I also use THE GIMP for graphic editing....free and good, although the learning curve on it is a bit steep....

OpenOffice, Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird are all favourites

i use firefox, and i got the adblocker plugin. also, i have it set so that it asks me about every cookie that tries to get set on my computer. that way i *know* i'm not setting adware/spyware cookies on my compy, cause i only allow sites where cookies are necessary to set cookies on my computer.

and I wouldn't be without either.

OpenOffice is far more versatile than MSOffice too
