A week ago, I was to pick up my daughter from her grandmother's...I was a bit early, and spotted a garage-sale just two blocks from my mother's and decided to stop in. The first, and just about only thing that I noticed was a pair of ferrets in a cage with a sign above them saying that they neded a new home, listing the investment cost of the equipment, and asking for offers. They are the sweetest, most gentle ferrets that you could ever meet, one a sable, the other a DEW. I asked about them (their owner was not there at the moment), left my card, and went to pick up my daughter.

I was to have given my stepfather a ride somewhere (his truck is in the shop), but he decided that he was to tired, and would go in the evening in a company vehicle.....as a result of this, I had some spare time and decided to stop back at the sale to allow my daughter to see the ferrets.

When we arrived, the ferrets' owner was now on site, and was reading my card as we walked up. She had reconised my name, as it turns out she is a friend of a friend [who had strongly suggested me as a possible new home for these ferrets when she heard that her friend had to give them up (due to severe allergies)]. It also turns out that she lives just a couple of blocks away from me, which is important, as her 4 year-old daughter was pretty upset about having to give up the ferrets, and this would allow her to visit.

She had also heard about my ferret, who recently lost his cagemate, and that I had been potentially in the market for a new companion for him. We talked...and talked....long story short, she accepted $60 from me and I now have two new family members, both 9 months old, "Nip" and "Tuck"!

Post-script: Driving 20 miles home with two loose ferrets in a minivan at 60mph is really not advised.

Lucky ferrets going to the best home in Calgary

I did hear a radio report that day of a couple of ferrets driving a minivan down Deerfoot Trail at 60 mph. Apparently there was also a guy in there flailing his arms around but he didn't appear to be in control of the vehicle. Could that have been you?

no it is def. not easy to ride with loose ferrets, i found a neat contraption to keep mine in her seat. i've always wanted a DEW but I've never seen one around me. congrats on the find, carpetsharks are the best FURRY pets around. Pix please!!!!

I had to add a pic, my ferret is very jealous of all the pics I post of my fish.

Actually, to be accurate, my DEW is really what is considered a 'silver', and, it turns out, deaf as a post.

aww, deaf ferrets are harder to train, but as lovable as any. Most DEW's are deaf, a lot of white animals that aren't necessarily albino are that way. Hope your little guys settle in well.

This one is already about as trained as they get and as gentle as anything...he even switched over to the RAW diet I feed my ferrets straightaway with no problems.

I meant training like coming when called. My ferret is trained to come when she heres a squeak/clicker/shaking noise. Thats how I find her when she hides or falls asleep. Deaf ferrets cant respond like that.

i think all ferrets "pretend" to be deaf so that they can act all cute when you catch them doing something wrong

Oh yes...both my hearing ferrets come to a squeaker...the deaf one is usually within sight of one of the others and simply follows suit.

haha mine comes to either b/c she knows she'll get a treat either way. Toirtis that was what I figured, that she would just follow along. And yes, I think they do pretend to be deaf...once I went to the mall and my darling got out of the ferret only rooms...I think she uprooted 3 plants, and knocked soil everywhere...oh boy did Mom have a fit. I'm just glad they were ferret-safe plants. Another time she snuck out at night and crawled into the headboard of my moms bed (who isn't the most ferret friendly person) and my mom thought it was a burgular so my dad found a baseball bat, thank god when she popped her little weasel face out he didnt smack her. I could ramble on for ever about the things she's done...
Anybody else have funny fuzzbutt stories???
