I take it the schneiders decided to get mean, lol, they often do, dont let that put you off skinks though, many of them are great pets. Fireside skinks and emerald skinks (not for beginners- very fragile) are some of the prettiest lizards you can own. And some members of the genus tiliqua are some of the most personable. I used to love my occellated skinks. They were livebearers,I started with two and after a 2 years had fifty Its quite nice not to have to bother with egg incubation. |

Fireside the skink was as calm as anything but it was also as BORING as anything, they live in the sand and i gave ti about 7" of sand to tunnel in, so it lived in the sand on a daily basis...even ended up burying worms for it. Also, i have no problem with "mean" animals, infact i prefer it, at least i know they still have instincts. even WC leos (not that ive seen any in years) will gape their mouth at you and hiss sometimes, too. I have kept true fire belly skinks, ocellated skinks and broad-headed skinks, but the latter was my favourite, still cant say i warmed to them. I prefer something that is rather unique or has some proper charcter about it..this is why i am not one for leopard geckos. i mean, sure, they're cute, but man, its hard to even call them geckos anymore. they've been bred and bred and bred, have you seen leos hunt?...its painful to watch. most are real lazy and cant catch their prey, and some even have to be tweezer fed. i let all my animals live in natural environments, even with the right located plants if i can find them. James Edit: http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t72/james_meehan/emma_outside014.jpg Took the kingsnake outside today. pretty cute. shes an albino aberrant. And heres one of my male xanthic pictus, you cant tell hes xanthic as i used the flash. duh. http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t72/james_meehan/xanthic002.jpg |

longhairedgit Fish Guru Lord of the Beasts Posts: 2502 Kudos: 1778 Votes: 29 Registered: 21-Aug-2005 | Ever consider a thai water dragon? They were some of the best lizards I ever kept. They had the entertainment value. Mine would run up my leg and take food from my hand, take baths in a little waterfall I had set up for them. They would wave at me if I waved at them, head bob, the lot. Females especially are really personable. They need big vivs though, maybe 6 x 4 x 3 feet or larger for a couple of specimens for proper maintenance. A bit like a semi-aquatic green iguana without the attitude, although as with the iguanas males should not be kept together. Omnivore too, so easy to feed. Mine would fish for live fish like guppies and baby eels. Only big lookout is not to let humidity get too low, or the diet get too rich, they do need decent dietary calcium too. They are a "proper" lizard species though , requiring UBV , UVA , lit 95f hot spots a thermal gradient of 70-86 f and a container of water they can get right into, branches above ground level and decent ventilation, but if your used to the tropical lizards they are among the very best for entertainment value. They can become true pets rather like bearded dragons can if handled properly to avoid making them nervous. |

Mez Ultimate Fish Guru Asian Hardfeather Enthusiast Posts: 3300 Votes: 162 Registered: 23-Feb-2001 | Im looking at getting another pair of these atm, then ive got one of those peninine vivs free, the largest one, so im debating what to go in there. Ever kept dendrobates? think they'd make a good display tank, but man frogs bore me...wondering if they're just the same, with bright colours? |

He makes use of the whole tank pretty much. Some darts are very secretive though. Just make sure you get an active/bold species. Critical Fertilator: The Micromanager of Macronutrients |
