My sister is going to France for a year to be a rotary exchange student. She's leaving on Monday the 23rd. I don't know whether to celebrate or cry. We've never been very close, but she IS my only sister. Even my dogs can sense that she's leaving. They've been on edge for a month or so now. She'll be having her junior year in high school over in France, in a town near Toulouse (sp?). Well, wish her luck!

Celebrate or cry? Hmmm, I think within the year that she is gone, you'll be doing a bit of both

Best wishes for your sister!

My buddy is also going to France (in the South somewhere on the coast) this year on an engineering student exchange.

Which town? You should write her letters, everyone likes getting mail, and postage isn't a tenth as expensive as the average fish purchase! She speaks French, right? Are the classes going to be in French or English? If it's the former, make sure she has headache medicine (that kind of concentration: not easy), and if it's the latter, send her with a little notebook to take down every new word she hears so she can improve her French as much as is possible when there's English all around her most of the day.

I have to go to Rome for the '05-'06 year as part of my Classics degree. On the one hand, yay, Rome, but on the other hand, who's really happy about being thousands and thousands of miles away from his or her family for eight months?

She says she'll be in St. Alban. She has had 2 years of French, but one year was with a totally incompetant teacher. My mom is fluent in French since she was an exchange student twice in France, so she help Marika, my sister. Her classes are going to be in French, so she's trying to see if the teachers will grade her just on effort for the first few months, until she gets the language down. It's hard to think that today is the last day I'll see her for a year!

Well that's sad ... my younger sister cried, and slept in my bed for a couple of days when I left.

Good luck to your sister!

I'm leaving this Thursday, and my little six-year-old brother isn't very happy about it.

awww Demosthenes9 *hugs for your little brother* better have him draw you pics and write you letters too .

Both of my younger sisters did the CTY (Uni. classes for middle and high school students) again this summer, I think for their third time. Even though the older one was closer to home than the other two years, the restrictions that were placed on them because they were minors was killin her...Whetu and I busted her out for a day and she was soooo pleased. A few phone calls, and a few e-mails helped as well....while e-mail will be much cheaper than snail mail I'd suggest it Janna, especially since most european countries I've been too haven't been quite as up to date on the internet as the states (uni will of course have it but nothing beats a letter)....oh and have her load up on coffee that takes care of headaches (least it takes care of mine

^_^

Well I certainly wish her luck. I bet she has the time of her life over there.

Make sure she gets herself set up with a visa debit card over here, and have it linked to a paypal account. Just in-case she needs $$. It takes about 3 days to get it but it is less hassle and cheaper (free) than having it wired. Visa is excepted most every where so it will work over there. When I went to Sweden I was able to pull Swedish money from an ATM outa my bank account.

I think you should be happy for her, that shes following her goals . My brother left for 5 years for the army..its something he really wanted to do, so I guess all I can do is feel happy for him.
