NEW Georgia Aquarium | |
Aqua Newbie n MS Hobbyist Posts: 102 Votes: 1 Registered: 01-Jan-2006 | I visited the new Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Georgia, USA last week and enjoyed my visit very much. If I'm not mistaken, they have the largest single tank of any aquarium in North America (possibly the World?). The centerpiece of this tank are a pair of whale sharks (in addition to some smaller sharks, schools of manta rays and hundreds of other fish). The displays are approximately 60% saltwater and 40% freshwater fish species. Additionally, they have beluga whales, penguins, otters and sea lions. I've been to the Chattanooga (TN) and New Orleans (LA) aquariums in recent years and this one blows them out of the water (no pun intended). If you get the chance, plan a visit soon. I would, however, suggest contacting them in advance and planning your trip around any organized student tours/field trips/etc.. The students were a bit on the loud side and made some of the more narrow hallways leading to the displays difficult to navigate. |

Here in cincinnati we don't have anything huge, but our aquarims main display is veiwed from within. There is a network of thick glass tunnels that runs through each main display tank. What was it like in Atlanta? Did you by any chance take any pictures?/:' Nick "Impossumable- unable to play dead" |

Koi (well for now, there will always be newer bigger and better in the future.) Empty chairs at empty tables, the room silent, forlorn. |

I don't believe the facility itself is the biggest in the world but the main tank may be the largest single indoor tank in the world (6 or 8 million gallons?). I recently saw a documentary on one that is under construction in Spain that I think will open in the next year or so. By all accounts, it will break all records. |
