you might also want to consider a more water-retaining substrate for them... all the water will evaporate off the sand pretty quickly

Yeah, I was thinking about putting some of that reptile moss stuff in. I guess since they were scorpions, I just assumed that they were desert animals (hence the sand), and it didn't help that the pictures in the book I was reading showed them in desert environments.

Also adding a shallow water dish will raise humdidity

They already have a water dish in there (with cotton), so is that enough for now? I'm not really worried about the humidity right now, as there are lots of fish tanks around and it's really rainy, and that hopefully raised the ambient humidity to a good level.

Thanks for the advice, guys!

I like the cat, but not the scorpion.

I would assume misting regularly would keep the humidity up. Worked for the frogs at the LCS I worked at. We also had scorpions but nobody told us to mist them...

Edit: you might also want to consider a more water-retaining substrate for them... all the water will evaporate off the sand pretty quickly.

I have bred emperors...and yes, they do need a high humidity...they are a forest scorpion.

Crap... How would I go abouts securing a high humnidity environment for them?

Have you kept emperors?

I read stuff online that says they need like 80% humidity... Is that true?

Exoterra UTHs are about $12 each and are about the best on the market.

No scorpions at present, but I have had several species in past years.

Major impulse buy today the the LFS... A pair of emperor scopions! They are really awesome and easy to take care of (only need to be fed once a week). Most people are scared of them and think they are dangerous, but really they are very tame and never try to sting if they are handled properly. Their sting only feels like that of a bee anyway.

I pampered them and got a huge container for them (they could be kept in one 1/4 that size). They also have a rock heater and sand on the bottom.

Here are some photos:

Does anybody else here keep emperor scorpions?

I used to have two pet scorpions as well. I am not exactly sure of what the actual type was, but they were wild caught in CA. They were named Zap and Sting. Most people don't realize how mildly venemous some types of scorpions and tarantulas are. My husband HATES spiders and anything else of the sort, so the chances of me getting any again are slim to none and I think slim just left town. THAT would be the aquarium that would make me a single woman again! LOL!

Hahaha... I figured these would be the kinds of response I'd get about them.

natalie!! a heat rock? are you nuts? ditch the thing!! They're bad

Really? Damn... Those heating pads are like $50. The rock was much cheaper.

Did you know Scorpions glow under black light?

Yep, they also glow under the actinic reef lights. At the store I would accasionally show people that, but the UV rays in the lights really bother them so I don't really like to do it.

Cool! I've got a Tarantula and thought about a Scorpion but I don't want another cage to fuss with right now. Maybe when the Tarantula munches his last cricket.
