The mouth of the jar looks dangerously close to the water level in the tank. If some water evaporated, all the water in the jar would spill back into the tank.

Actually, any evaporation would pull water out from the jar. People used to use this as a method for top offs while on vacation.

im confused wat stopping the water from spilling out of the jar and into the tank? after all water does tend to equalize itself

It's a little thing called air pressure that's keeping it inside the jar. Oh, the joys of physics

And yea, you can use a similar setup for auto topoffs, but you need airline tubing and stuff... it ain't too hard...

i used to do that playing around in the sink with cups, but never thought about using that in my fish tanks.

waffle.... now i'm curious. how would you set that up for the auto topoff?
