[font color="#000080"]Here's one I got from THE AGE:

The Italian town of Monza has banned people from keeping
goldfish in bowls. A council official said fish get a
"distorted view of reality" if kept in a bowl instead of a
filtered, rectangular tank.

I hate those 4 inch betta bowls. THEY seem cruel. And you know most of the people buying them will not properly care for them.

At least bettas can survive better in bowls than goldfish... They're better adapted to living in small quarters. Just as long as you change the water weekly, there shouldn't be huge problems with keeping a betta in a bowl. If you don't change the water, they will probably die a horrible death of rotting alive... but if you do they can live over three years like that...

IMHO it's actually not a bad reason. I mean, the typical person doesn't understand "the water is unfiltered muck" or "the fish won't have room to swim" or "the water will be totally unoxygenated". They might actually buy the "distorted view of the world" line though.

I can't remember the source, but apparently the same town council claimed that the goldfish have no oxygen in the bowl. LFS owners reportedly replied that goldfish can breathe air. All hearsay though.
