superlion Mega Fish Posts: 1246 Kudos: 673 Votes: 339 Registered: 27-Sep-2003 | *understands what Babel is saying* I get just a small taste of the cacophony every morning when my green cheek conure, Harvey, wakes up. And cockatoos are considerably louder than he is. I do sleep in the same room where Harvey's cage is, I wouldn't dream of doing the same with a cockatoo! The kookaburras we have at the zoo aren't exactly quiet either. Yeah, parrots and such are cool animals, and nice to look at, but if I'm going to have 10 of something in my back yard in the morning, I'd rather have goldfinches than rosellas. I would like to know what kinds of places members have gone to get these photos, especially Rob and Denver! ><> |

This one had made a nest in a tree that died as a result of the ground temp rising as a new hot spring formed. The whole area was desolate looking (and smelly) except for this bright little spot of blue. Later on some birders pointed this little guy out. |

I might be able to post some photos of the finches and tits I feed tomorrow or something... My computer is broken so I can't do much in the way of uploading/editing photos right now. My main crew consists of American Goldfinches, Lesser Goldfinches, Pine Siskins, House Finches, Purple Finches, Oak Titmice, and Chestnut-Backed Chickadees. The quality is not very good due to all the fires we've been having; the air is a cloudy gray and the sunlight has a gross orange tinge to it. I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

Natalie Ultimate Fish Guru Apolay Wayyioy Posts: 4499 Kudos: 3730 Votes: 348 Registered: 01-Feb-2003 | The otter scared away all the birds we were feeding in the pond, but then it climbed out and rolled around in the dirt and tried to look innocent, so I took some photos of it. The chicks are my cousin's; there are three Gold-Laced Wyandottes and three Silver-Laced Wyandottes. She's had them for about a week now, but they are already pretty much tamed (they are pets, not for food). I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

Gone_Troppo Enthusiast Posts: 285 Kudos: 196 Registered: 13-Mar-2007 | Thanks Bren This bee-eater was the only 'co-operative' one of 5 or 6 pairs that I saw this morning. I also saw lots of lorikeets and a couple of kingfishers while out and about, but unfortunately couldn't get any nice pics of them either. G_T Never be afraid to try something new. Natalie Ultimate Fish Guru Apolay Wayyioy Posts: 4499 Kudos: 3730 Votes: 348 Registered: 01-Feb-2003 | Hahaha, owls always look hilarious when they get their photo taken. I've bought books on birds before just for the photos in the owl section. EDIT: Also, those are excellent photos of the swallows. What species are they? I've tried to take pictures of the Violet-Green Swallows that nest around my house, but I have failed miserably thus far. I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

Natalie Ultimate Fish Guru Apolay Wayyioy Posts: 4499 Kudos: 3730 Votes: 348 Registered: 01-Feb-2003 | Here's something I saw this morning that's only slightly less morbid - a House Finch with what appears to be a large tumor on the side of its head. The Pine Siskin to the left looks like it lost its appetite. (The poor quality of the photos is because the windows were covered in hard water stains.) I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

It looks a lot like our various Emberizine sparrows... I think the only members of that family that are found in the Old World are the longspurs, though.
