Ok, I am just wondering,

On british computers, is there a symbol for "pounds" on the keyboard above the digit "4" rather than a $ symbol???

Maybe it's over a completely different key - foreign keyboards are tough, the letters are in a different arrangement so my typing slows to a crawl. The Italian ones are okay but the French ones are impossible.

My dollar sign is over the 4 here on the laptop and is over the 3. But the laptop could be an import.

Same on my microsoft "natural" (the wiggly one) keyboard.

I remember being at a computer in france and I just typed as I would normally without looking down till the gibberish appeared on the screen. Then I looked down and noticed the keyboard was all wrong.

So of the is over the 3, then where is the #?

Interestingly it seems in the US the name for # is 'pound'. In New Zealand we call it 'hash'. :%)

Yeah, that would probably get confusing (# vs. pound sign for money) if it weren't in context. But I for one never hear # as "pound" except on phone recordings ("Enter your access code and then press pound!". IRL, we mostly say number sign for that (at least around here, I suppose I shouldn't speak for the whole country).
Man do I abuse parentheses. Sorry 'bout that.

Computer geeks call that a hash too. "hash-bang" (#!) is what most unix scripts start with.

The hash # key is above the right shift key, just left of the 'enter' key! On its left is the ' and @ key. Then : and ;, with LKJ etc..

What, so the @ key isn't above the number 2?

The top line of my keyboard looks like this:
~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ +

Then if I don't use the shift key it's:
` 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - =

So what's the top row of a British keyboard look like?

Ok, so the top row of the keyboard is: (beginning with a key with three symbols on but I don't know how to get the third )

With shift!
! " $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + (delete)
Without shift!
` 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - = (delete)
