Freedom.

That's what's so good about being an adult.

You might not realise it, but you actually have choices about what material goods you acquire, where and how and with whom you spend your time, what takes priority in your life.

Often people feel trapped by the 'stuff' and the expectations around them (including their own expectations of what it means to be successful). To me, being an adult means realising that actually we have real choices - not choices about what cereal we'll buy or what clothes we'll wear to work, but choices about what continent we'll live on, who we'll love, what kind of person we'll be.

It's all yours for the taking, babelfishie.

The thing is, what other choice do you have? Give up and declare yourself insane, check into the mental hospital and have someone change your adult diapers....OR.. get over it, deal with all the bumps, rocks, potholes and Boulders in the road and enjoy even the few minutes of time we have to look at the fish .

This is kind of a long methaphor, but I like it. Think of yourself as walking down a path, in that path are varying size of obstacles (rocks). If you are confident and ready to handle anything, those rocks appear like pebbles, and are easily overcome, if even noticed at all. If you are depressed, hard on yourself, or just not confident, then those same pebbles become huge mountains of rock that are seemingly impossible to overcome. But it is all dependant on your viewpoint. You get to decide how you view the rocks.

Now none of this is easy...and I don't proclaim to have just pebbles in front of me...(I think I have mostly boulders..lol) But it is a good way to look at it..lol

Good Luck with life... we're all in it together..or we're buried together..lol

Yeah it's hard sometimes, I just press on. We all go through bad times when nothing seems to go well at all. It eventually gets better. *hugs*

is it possible we all just make it too hard on ourselves? do we overcomplicate things more than we should?

If i sit back and look in, things took simple enough, but when you are all muddled in there trying to actually 'live' it, its far more complicated than it looks.

] $600 minimum for a new washing machine.

] need a new cell phone because the headset managed to break mine, and I don't like any of the new models

] why do my electric outlets keep going out

] my mom still treats me like a kid sometimes (called when I was on the road to bug me about who I was going to visit and blaa blaa blaa a few weeks ago)

] My (real) dad is pestering me about coming to visit him in AZ (although he hasn't called me for a month )

] mortgage and car payments...well ya it was great being able to get the car on my own (my old car I got on my own too) but the mortgage is joint under my and my sisters name (@the time I was a contractual employee and they didnt' accept my income) even though I'm the one that saved for a downpayment, did the house hunting, kept on track of all the paperwork, and pay more than twice the mortgage monthly.

*hugs her prius, and inserts a chocolate IV*

Well the only cool thing for me is my child. Being a single working mom the money just pays the bills and keeps food on the table. I would love to be back to the days when all I worried about were exams and reports.
I still cant come and go as I please as I work a 10 hour work day, and have to be home in time for my daughter to go to bed (babysitters are too expensive) so I have an 8 pm curfew lol.

Best part of being an adult (although as we know, it isn't always the way it goes) is having children and watching them experience the things you did, or the things you weren't able to. It kinda is a second childhood.

I'm 30, married, with a 1yr old and a 5 yr old. We have a 4 yr old dog and new fish tank. I work full time, go to school part time to get my masters degree...have no money...lol.. but its my own house, my own car, and I do what I want...assuming the hubby and the kids are okay with it

Sometimes I miss being a kid...and not having to worry about anything...getting excited about summer, and going back to school...But then I would miss out on all the 'fun' adult stuff I get to do...like pay my mortgage, remodel my house, and fix the crap that breaks... its no fun, really, but it does have its rewards knowing you were able to struggle through it on your own.

But yet... "I don't wanna grow up"!:%)

I like being able to come and go as I please. If I want to come home at 5:45 am and then go to work at 6 am there is noone to say anything to me.

well, they say being older means more responsibility, but i can think of a few people i know who are either pushing 30 or way past it who are not nearly as responsible as some high school kids i know your life is always going to be what you make of it, and if you decide that your time is better spent wishing for something you can't have again, then you're missing out on the big picture. yes, this even means dealing with broken stuff and having to take care of things on your own

That's life, that's what all the people say.
You're riding high in April,
Shot down in May
But I know I'm gonna change that tune,
When I'm back on top, back on top in June.

I said that's life, and as funny as it may seem
Some people get their kicks,
Stompin' on a dream
But I don't let it, let it get me down,
'Cause this fine ol' world it keeps spinning around

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
A poet, a pawn and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
And I know one thing:
Each time I find myself, flat on my face,
I pick myself up and get back in the race.

That's life
I tell ya, I can't deny it,
I thought of quitting baby,
But my heart just ain't gonna buy it.
And if I didn't think it was worth one single try,
I'd jump right on a big bird and then I'd fly

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
A poet, a pawn and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
And I know one thing:
Each time I find myself laying flat on my face,
I just pick myself up and get back in the race

That's life
That's life and I can't deny it
Many times I thought of cutting out
But my heart won't buy it
But if there's nothing shakin' come this here july
I'm gonna roll myself up in a big ball and die

I like being able to experiment in the kitchen, and well, lets be honest, there is PLENTY more room for tanks when its not full of parents and siblings...

You know a much easier question would be, "what stinks about being an adult?" Things like mortgage, car payments, insurance, washing machines, groceries..... But those answers don't require thought or give us any insight. Let me try a few good things.

Just the other day I heard one of the high school girls working here for the summer say, "Last time I was late for curfew..." Can you imagine a curfew as an adult?

How about being able to purchase a car. I remember when I got my car I was so happy I could get it without anyone to co-sign. The same thing with my house.

Another good thing about being an adult is your parents become more like friends and less like a boss. At least mine did. I go over to my parents every Thursday for dinner.

I'm sure there are lots more reasons why it is good to be an adult. I know I really wouldn't want to be in highschool again. So it's got to be somewhat better. So we traded school for a job and homework for housework. All in all I think being an adult is ok.

1) My mother doesn't live here
2) I can eat and sleep when i like
3) It is MY place. (well, technically its rented, but you know what i mean)

There are cruddy things too, but i am liking it so far.

I'd love to go back to being a kid (not now, but in my era)
