What changes occur (if any) in the cytoplasm during the Interphase of Mitosis. From what i gathered nothing does, but i want to be sure.

Thanks

As far as I remember nothing...of course it has been a number of years since I've had Biology Heidi

Mitosis is the process of division. Interphase is the first step in mitosis and has its on goings on.

what level of biology is it for?
highschool level basically nothing happens then
but if u look at it later on say in 3-4th year university then u learn bout what goes on

my father has a masters degree in biology so i learned all the crap they didnt teach u in hischool cuz the average person has no need for

Mitosis:..."A process that takes place in the nucleus of a dividing cell, involves typically a series of steps consisting of prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase, and results in the formation of two new nuclei each having the same number of chromosomes as the parent nucleus."

Like Gary said, interphase is not part of mitosis. It is the period of growth, preparing, if you will, for cell division, therefore, nothing happens to the cytoplasm.

That 5 in AP bio wasn't just for show .

You could copp out by pulling definitions off of dictionary.com or... you could put some faith in your own education, and back what you say.

What's really important here, as already mentioned, is the level of education we're at.

Interphase = Nothing or "Dormant" in some grade levels.

And again as already mentioned, Interphase can also equal:

A phase of preparing for the next mitotic division. It's also the stage that takes up the majority of the cells time.

Within Interphase, there are several "sub-phases" -

Gap 1 - Cell mass increase, biochemical activity, making proteins to synthesize DNA

S - DNA Synthesis

Gap 2- more protein synthesis, more increase in cell mass

It can get a lot more complicated than that.

Actualy, loads of things happen in the cytoplasm of every living cell at any stage of the cell cycle, except maybe when you deepfreeze the cells or when they've gone into dormancy. The whole cycle basically is a continuous process, we humans just like to divide it up into stages to make it a bit easier to understand Also, after a cell division a cell may go into a differentiation process, after which it will no longer be able to divide at all.

However, for an average high school level of biology you can simplify the process a bit and just say that indeed nothing much happens during the interphase except recovery, growth and preparation for the next cell division.

Simple, interphase in mitosis.
The cell carries out its normal function.
DNA replication as normal, translation, transcription, etc etc.

In cytoplasm, then DNA replication won't be a concern.
In the cytoplasm the following process is carried out:
-Transfer of material (endoplasmic transportation)
-Glycolysis (part of respiration)
-Production/modification of proten by ribosome (translation)
-Anaerobic respiration
-Endocytosis/Exocytosis (actually carried out by cell membrane)

Im in a Sophmore Honor Biology Class. My teacher did mention that Interphase isnt really a part of mitosis, but for right now we were just going to include it. Our text never mentioned any cytoplasm-related activitys going on during interphase, but my teacher is a tough grader and i wanted to double check.

Thanks everyone!

Oh I'm so mad I missed this! I'm in AP bio right now and had a test on this last week, which I got a 92 on. Darn, I'm too later. G/L

What the deus are you talking about? I didn't pull anything from dictionary.com, thanks. It came from my knowledge of biology as I recall it. It's not dormant, nor did I say it was dormant. Nothing happens to the cytoplasm. This, at least, is true. While the entire interphase process is in preparation for PMAT, nothing actually happens to the cytoplasm itself, IIRC, other than the fact that it increases.
