Hey,

My girlfriend really wants me to quit smoking, she hs this idea that if we get married and have children that i'll end up dying and she'll be a widow with kids. I've been thinking that yeah maybe i should give up...the wierd thing is tho i'm only 21 but has been smoking for 6 years.
If ne1 has given up smoking please tell me how u did it cause i'm un   creek without a paddle i can't last a day without 1.
There is one catch... my gf doesn't know how much i actually smoke... i'm like 3 packs a week and she thinks i only smoke 1 or 2 a day max.. yes.. i know i've been untruthful...and that's y i'm quitting, but because of this i don't wanna use patches..cause she thinks that i dun smoke enuf to use patches..

ARG..lol please help... and don't think i'm a bad person for bending the truth about smoking pwease!!

Well, I won't post a picture of one here, but do a search online for a post mortem picture of the lungs of a heavy smoker.. If that doesn't give you a bit of encouragement, I don't know what else will..

Also, if you don't feel that you can quit on your own and you don't want to wear patches, you might look into having your doctor prescribe you something.. Zyban is one medication that I know is used here, but I don't know if it's available to folks in your neck of the woods..

Good Luck to you..

It's hard! I did it two years ago! Two sometimes three packs a day $175. a month! I used the patch for two weeks, I don't think it helped much, cause then I had to get over useing the patch. I had mood swings and wanted foods with carbs all the time. If I got out and did something I felt better. Finding something to do with my hands helped and something in my mouth like a staw worked to. I wanted to eat all the time, sweets and anything baked. But watch what you eat, you'll get fat! Try all kinds of vegies and drink tons of water. Evertime I wanted a cig I'd drink water, like it was a fine wine. Anything to get you past that point where you are wanting to smoke. Support is what you need and your girl sounds great. So good luck! I know YOU CAN do this! Dont give up if you give in, just keep trying. It can be like leaveing a man you dont love anymore, you may have to try about seven times before you really do it. Giggles!

If you like raw veggies... use a carrot or celery stick to fool your brain a bit. Take carrot stick and let it hang out of your mouth as if it were a cigarette... eat it over a span of about 8 minutes and it should simulate a smoke break. Also, you need to completely clean out and throw away all ashtrays in your house. Febreze the whole place, open windows, whatever. Do this to your car as well... I ended up squirting air freshener right at my air vents and then turned the air on full (you want to hop out of the car for about 10 mins and let it work). Launder all your winter coats, jackets, and sweaters because those thicker fabrics keep that smokey smell in them forever. Okay, that's all I have for you but it all helped me. Good luck!

Remember even if you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms, you do NOT need a cigarette (or any other form of tobacco). May feel like you do, but there are few things a person really needs - food, water, shelter, air (smoke doesn't fit into any of those and has a bit of a negative effect on the last one). A bit of advice from someone who has very addiction-e behaviours.

You might want to consider accupuncture. Many clinics offer accupuncture to help with your problem. I've had accupuncture for other things in the past (it helped LOADS with my insomnia), and it's the best $30 I ever spent (actually my mom payed for it ). I've heard of a lot of great success stories from former smokers about accupunture, so I really think you should try it

Accupuncture doesn't hurt at all, as a lot of people think. The needle is so tiny, and they don't stick it in very far, so it doesn't hurt at all

Good luck

Did this my-self;
First off, find a reason to quit for YOUR-self. A lot of people say that you need to do it for others, not true. You are the one who benifets from the "good" things a cigarette has to offer. You will be the only one who deals with the withdraw symptoms. No one ever says, "You need to loose 30 pounds because your boyfriend says you're fat!"
Second, make a list, mental or physical, of all the cigarettes you smoke in a day. Examples would be, one when I wake up, one after breakfast, one on the way to work... You get the idea. After you get an accurate list, stick to it. Try not to smoke any more than what is on the list. When you can do that, choose the smoke you need the least. Eg, "Well, I smoke two during my lunch break, I'm sure I could do with only one."
When you can cut the first smoke with out any ill-effects, find another one and so-on.
You can keep ONE (yes one, and only one) "emergency" smoke per day on hand. If the boss gave you crap for things you didn't do, you need a smoke. If you chose to cut a smoke you need more than you thought, you can replace it, a few times. Just don't abuse the EMERGENCY smoke.
Finaly, remember to take your time. From the first day you find YOUR reason to stop, you're on the way. Any loved ones should respect you for that. If it takes two weeks to not miss a cigarette you cut out, it takes two weeks. Don't rush. If it take three days, good for you. You're moving along well. Move at your own pace.
Soon you will find your self smoking five per day, four per day...two... then one day, one glorious day, you too will be smoke free!
Good luck!

Forgot to mention, if this sounds strange then think of the way you started. Half a smoke, puke. One smoke, puke... No one ever starts from zero to four packs per day in one day, no one can quit from four packs per day to zero in a day in one day.
Again, Good Luck!

I'm a smoker and would like to quit, the cost alone is insane...I want to take more time to read these replies but wanted to offer a quick thought. My dad smoked for years, tried many times to quit with no luck. A friend of his brought up hypnosis, my dad decided he'd give it a try too. He never really believed in stuff like that, so while he truly wanted to quit he went not thinking it would work. He said he doesn't remember a lot about what happened, but after that appointment he never smoked again. This was something like 20 years ago.

Good luck to you

I quit smoking 3 years ago this coming spring. The reason I did was cuz every time I would cough, I would taste nicotine. I hated that it is so gross! It was literally like eating cigarette butts!
You know what I did to quit: I finish the pack I had. I did not buy another pack. I invested in a pack of nice Cigars I enjoy, and whenever I would have a serious nerve-wracking, harsh craving, I would smoke just 3 puffs off the cigar. After 1 week time, I stopped the cigars. Its been almost 3 years and I havent looked back. Mind you, sometimes I still get a craving or two, but really, its better for me. I cant say its better for those around me, because me and my boyfriend are the only people we know who dont smoke!!!! All our friends, family, etc smoke. It was hard to quit, but all I can remember thinking was: If I can make it through this craving I will be OK. And after about 3 days, the cravings got less, and by the end of a week, were almost gone. I had been smoking about 6-7 years as well.
I hope this can help you any! I know for some smokers, it is so hard its worth trying anything. Maybe this method will work for you.
Besides, accidently inhale a cigar, and you wont be thinking twice about smoking ever again!

I believe an important factor to quitting anything is, to know 100% that your going to do it, and you can do it.

Most addicts (bulimics, drinkers, etc) quit by always thinking about ONLY tomorrow. Dont say "I know i'll have cravings to smoke in a week, month, year, etc". Worry just about tomorrow, thats the easiest way to quit.

Focus day by day about not to smoke tomorrow, and tomorrow, focus not to smoke on the following day, and so on.

This helps you gradually realize that you can quit.
