Well, my 18 year old Tilapia Butikofferi has died. He started not eating a few days ago, which I'm sure just was the onset of his age as all else was fine.

May you RIP, Old Friend.

Aww...RIP. Sorry about losing him. If I had a fish for 18 years, I know I'd be really sad when they died. That's a long time.

He lived to be an old man. How big was he?

He was approximately 14 or 15 inches in length.

Just found this.

If it's any consolation, OldTimer, the mere fact that he lived 18 years in your care speaks volumes. As far as I'm aware, 18 years for that species may actually be some kind of record - I know Tilapias are known to live beyond 10 years in aquaria, and possibly beyond 12, but this is the first time I've heard of one making it to 18 years. Must have been a VERY happy and well cared for fish to become a Cichlid Methuselah like that!

Hopefully you'll have some good quality photos of him in his prime. Happy memories of a much loved fish, and in all probability, given Cichlid propensities in this area, one with bags of personality.

Reminds me of the day my 'Methusela' Otocinclus finally died after living more than 9 years, which for that species is probably some kind of record too. A sad loss, but mellowed by some happy reminiscences - not least the fact that he survived that long in my care. Must have done something right ...

I'd check to see if anyone else has had one of those fishes live to a similar age. Yours might well be the one that makes it into the record books, who knows?

Thanks for the comments Cali.

It was a sad day that he passed, but I do take consolation in the fact that I had him so long. By far the longest I've had any fish live.

He was special, and I'll miss him, but I'm sure there will be others.
