Sometimes, like many others here, I play the game of 'Identify That Fish'. Someone posts a description, possibly a photo, of a mystery fish, and off I pop, trawling through the Innes book and the TFH back numbers, hoping to answer the question. It's a fun pastime, particularly if the fish looks suitably exotic - and of course, there's the nice warm fuzzy feeling afterwards of having helped someone when you get it right. One notable instance I can recall was this thread when I homed in on some Poropanchax Killies for someone who was delighted at their find ...

Plus, I've had a stab at identifying a photo posted that reminded me very much of fishes belonging to the Genus Pomoxis (and I would dearly love to know who decided to bestow the common name of 'Crappie' upon the members of this Genus ... sigh).

However, sometimes a definitive identification is needed to sort out some other problems. I've just returned from Cyprinid Corner where someone talks about 'Banded Barbs'. Now that alone should have told me I was in for some fun and games (after all, how many striped Barb species are there in the aquarium?) but I thought I'd have a stab at this and see what species the poster had ...

So, I fired up Fishbase to do a species trawl.

What a shock I got ...

How many fishes have the generic name Barbus assoicated with them?

You'll all love this.

One thousand, one hundred and forty seven species.

Here is the list if you want to see for yourself.

Even for someone like me who likes ploughing through the lists, that's a somewhat daunting list to trawl though to find this 'Banded Barb'. So, sadly, on this occasion, I'll be passing that one for the moment and hoping that the owner of the fishes can supply me with a scientific name.

A little comedy moment for you all to savour.

if you hit 'valid names' the list shrinks to 350-ish - should help a little

Also, it would help if the original poster gave a more detailed description than an "elongated tiger barb". With specific colors and a certain number of stripes, that would definitely make identifying the fish easier.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.
