Here's the deal...my 7 year old kitty, Sunny, who is half tabby, (pics around somewhere...) has a major problem. She chews on wires. And when I say chews, I mean she SHREADS rubber insulator off them. It's very dangerous. She's going to electricute herself, start a fire, or both. The bigger problem is, I can't ever get to see her, because my dad makes her stay in the basement. And well, I understand why, she would wreck all of the stereo equipment, etc. if we didn't. But I miss not having her able to sleep with me at night. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to break this habit? I can't really go around spraying bitter apple on every wire in the house daily...and just hiding them isn't really an option either, there's too many that have to be exposed for various reasons.
Help. I feel like the only other option is removing her teeth.

you could try jalapeno juice on all the wires. supposedly it evaporates, so you won't smell jalapeno's all over the house, and you don't have to reapply it. once kitty gets a taste of those wires, she should stop chewing them

Is it possible to use those electrical wire tidy things, they're like hollow tubes that fit over all your leads, keeping them together and tidy? Maybe that might make it harder for the kitty to get to the leads?

rusty took my idea... they're called wire looms. or cutting a slit into a garden hose will keep the cat occupied for a while...

One of cats used to go behind the computer and chew and pull on all the wires back there, but then we just gave her a wire that we weren't using and now she just plays with that.

well i hate to say this but, well first off try jalapenos.. but if that doesnt work keep in mind the first time she gets a little shock she wont do it again, and as long as its not a wire for something like a generator the little shock wont hurt her... make her a little crazy for a bit yes... kill her no. i know sounds cruel but cats are like kids, they wont listen to you till it happens to them. i have 3 myself and a rottie that thinks its a cat so i'm speaking from experience... although mine liked to chew on the radio itself not he cord... stopped shortly after he got his first and last shock, and he's 9 now and completely healthy ( barring the UT problem). me

Well...she's been doing this for years and hasn't learned her lesson yet, and I don't doubt that she's been shocked. So, I'm going to bring up some of those suggestions to my Dad. This should be fun...

Well hopefully one of those will help, our new puppy does the same thing and I tied all the cords up to stop him from getting to them but he still pulls them down so perhaps I need to take some of the advice given here as well

I was just reminded of national lampoons Christmas vacation.
LOL Troy, that was one of my all time favourite movies, hopefully FerretFanatic has the cord problem solved before the xmas tree goes up
