Spirulina tablets | |
Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | With spirulina being all the rage as being great for fish and with even astronauts taking spirulina tablets, I thought I would buy some tablets for my family. The manufacturers should put a great big message on the bottle in bold letters, only put in your mouth if you have a big glass of water in your hand. Honestly, it smells like what comes off the glass in my fish tank and tastes about as good too, yukky. What is the motto? If it tastes bad it must be good for you. |

If I were you I wouldn't waste my money. It was a sort of fad many years ago as a "health food", because it's high in protein. I say fry an egg - mostly protein (and whole egg protein has exactly the right balance of amino acids you need), and it doesn't smell like something that died! You don't want to know how many Spirulina tablets it would take to make that much either... My aquatic botany professor had a "Spirulina cookbook" from back in the glory days of the alga. Most of the recipes were normal recipes with Spirulina as an added ingredient. Something like "Waldorf Salad with Spirulina"... ><> |

Animal protein always contains more EAAs (at least ratio wise), but you don't use a steak as a dietary supplement, not to mention you miss some of the EFAs provided by spirulina and other plant like dietary sources (all while not being like, 70 percent fat by caloric intake). |

Spriulina is beneficial while fasting. It supplies the nutrients needed to help cleanse and heal, while also curbing the appetite. A person with hypoglycaemia may benefit from using this food supplement between meals because its high protein content helps stabilize blood sugar levels." From reading the entry it seems he iron, high protein (60-70% ) and b12 make it good for vegetarians... but if you have meat in the diet it may not be as beneficial. Kelp tablets are my algae of choice ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |
