Just bumping this one up.. Please remember everybody, that something as small as $5, £5, $10, £10 is worth a great deal more to the victims of this disaster and can achieve much more than it could in your hands.
Even if money is tight for you right now, that £/$5 you really could spare, if you think about it.
Be thankful that you are in a position to give help to the victims, and that you aren't praying that others will help you in your hour of need.

I like to think that whoever designed marine life was thinking of it as basically an entertainment medium. That would explain some of the things down there, some of the unearthly biological contraptions

Cory_Di, I think Tiny_Clanger is on the same side as you . I believe she was just trying to be careful not to create an international incident by asking Americans to donate to a French charity. And look what happened!

From what I know of the Clanger I'm pretty sure she has nothing against Non Governmental Organisations. And from what I know of most Americans they will donate to whoever they think will get the job done, regardless of what country they're based in.

I just donated to the Red Cross. I went to the Doctors Without Borders website, and they said they have sufficent funds to cope with their envolvement in Asia.

EDIT:
Google just set up a page with a listing of organizations you can donate to concerning the Tsunami Relief:

http://www.google.com/tsunami_relief.html

I first thought it was whether a charity was legitimate and the Better Business Bureau is THE place to check. However, I sense that some people have an issue with NGOs. That one took issue with NGOs in this thread is what took it down a slippery slope. I didn't even know anyone had an issue with it until now.

I support the idea of people just giving, to charities they are comfortable with, and to which are legitimate.

Some people are setting up sites that mimic legit sites, but alter the names slightly. These are the ones to watch.

If you are concerned about the honesty of any particular organization, you can always personally check it out with the Better Business Bureau. Don't make this a thread to fight about it.

If I had any money to give, I would send it to Gospel for Asia, who are doing an emergency fundraiser to help out families during the crisis. I will probably get some kind of warning if I say too much about them here.

The Red Cross is the only US charity I know is 100% kosher -not knowing much about US charity work, and not sure that Medecins Sans Frontiers(Doctors without borders) would be an appropriate link given that it is a French NGO.

I have an open enough mind that it doesn't matter to me which organizations people donate to - be they NGO or otherwise. It's their money they can do what they want with it. On the other hand, the statement above clearly attempts to "sensor" or restrict choices and steer people away from some organizations. It also assumes that ALL people share your point of view about NGO's, when you state that it isn't an appropriate link.

Thankfully, it is a free enough world that I can give my to any organization to which I would like and the same goes for everyone else. I think it would be best to let people decide for themselves to whom they wish to donate. I don't see any sense in dictating to people's conscious based on some political issue at this time. Right now its a crisis. If you find yourself in a crisis and wish to reject lifesaving medicine and surgery because an NGO is offering it, that is your priviledge. However, those on the recieving end this very moment could probably give a rip who and where it is coming from. I have more than gladly given to two NGO's, in addition to the Red Cross because they have people already in the field.

People come into this thread looking to provide information for people to donate, not to get their hand slapped because a link they provided didn't live up to someone else's standards.

*steps off soapbox*

Goodness! That felt good

NGO = Non-governmental organization.

Hmmmm..... I wonder if anyone receiving a doctors care in the tsunami stricken area is going care if it comes from an NGO. It's more important that people give, but first check out their sources. I've been a Doctors without Borders supporter since I learned about it years ago and I know my money is well spent. I don't care what country they originated in, they have spread out across the globe and are now an international charity, with offices here in the US and medical personnel coming from many of the 50 states.

Doctors without Borders - Financial Information:

http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/info.shtml

View the very last bullet in the Detroit Free Press, one of two main local papers:

http://www.freep.com/news/nw/quake29e_20041229.htm

A link from a New Zealand source, similar to an article I read here in the US, about them being the first to reach the Aceh area:

http://www.nbr.co.nz/home/column_article.asp?id=11021&cid=5&cname=Asia%20&%20Pacific

Also, some doctors have already departed from my area as part of the organization (local news coverage). It's not just the money that drives me to continue to support this organization, but the fact that so many doctors, nurses and medical personnel donate their precious time to work in squalid conditions around the world.

I agree that people need to be careful about what Charities to which they give. Hopefully, people check out the financial side of any organization to make sure the needy are being helped and not the administrators.

Here is a source in the USA to check your charity:

The recent tsunami has devastated areas of the world, and the latest death toll is 60,000. Please, everyone, consider donating anything you can spare to the aid effort, helping people rebuild their lives.

I was intending to post the DEC link, which I have been posting round UK forums, as it is the clearing house for all UK donations, but realised it was a UK specific organisation, which might not appeal to people of other nationalities. The Red Cross is the only US charity I know is 100% kosher -not knowing much about US charity work, and not sure that Medecins Sans Frontiers(Doctors without borders) would be an appropriate link given that it is a French NGO.

Doctors without Borders were some of the first to be in the hardest hit areas.

http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org

Also, if you work for GM, they are matching your contribution if you give to the Red Cross, UNICEF, or CARE through a link at their site. Be sure to provide your GM email address as they will verify that you do work for them.

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/041230/nyth061_1.html

Click on the link at the bottom of the above news article for GMability and follow directions there. I had already provided to Doctors without Borders and to Catholic Relief Services when I found out about their match. So, I donated more . It's only money, right?

I don't know about anyone else, but it has been hard to get through to some of the websites due to overwhelming response. I had to go back late at night to get into Doctors without Borders, and to CRS.

Yep, there are local and international organisations collecting donations all over the world. Some of the best IMO are the Red Cross and Oxfam http://www.oxfam.org/eng/programs_emer_asia.htm

Well, maybe the message should be edited to "Please go to RedCross.org - you know what to do from there" but in any case, I've donated.

Of course, the Red Cross isn't a be all and end all - Operation USA ([link=http://www.opusa.org/]http://www.opusa.org/" style="COLOR: #4040FF[/link], formerly Operation California) is a very efficiently-run organization and doing all they can as well.

We gave $100 today. What a disaster. That's more people than live in Montrose County.
