Overlapping one here in the UK that straddled the late 60s and early 70s (I think it finally died a death in 1973) was Clackers. Apparently discontinued because they shattered and kids were lacerated by flying shrapnel. We lived such interesting lives back then. |

Forgot one thing that was a BIG hit over here in the 1970s by the way - the Smash Martians. They were used to advertise Smash - a brand of instant mashed potato (yes, just add water, just like the 10,000 instant Martians in the Bugs Bunny cartoon) - and looked like this. If you were ANYWHERE near a British television set in the 1970s, these will be INSTANTLY recognisable. So that the rest of the world can see what the fuss is about, have a look at the original advert preserved for posterity on YouTube, which incidentally has been voted the Best TV Advert of the past 25 years in a poll by the BBC. In fact you can still buy Smash Martians toys if you know where to look ... |

bayoubuddy Fingerling Posts: 32 Kudos: 22 Registered: 16-Jun-2004 | I would have said records if the years had started in the 50's & 60's. that makes me sad. to think that people believe that records didn't come around until the 50s...so scary, so tragic. The first disc records were introduced in the late 1880s, which is post phonographic cylinders. The 78, which is probably what you're thinking of...didn't start until the late 20s...of course, the discs were pretty brittle, and the drummer had to play down the hall in the bathroom or the needle would bust the record...many early records have woodblock percussion, no snares or floor toms. Another fun fact... the average length of a recorded song today is 3 minutes 20 seconds...because that's how long you had on a record before you had to flip sides. Gene Krupa's famous drum solo for Sing, Sing, Sing...lasted 17 minutes...that's a lot of record discs for one song. |

I did NOT think for one minute that records weren't invented until the '50's, so it's not all that sad and tragic. Just like 8 tracks were not invented in the 70's, cassettes were not invented in the '80's etc. This is a pop-culture, "what was the big thing in that decade" thread. "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder." |
