Makes me wish I had grown up on a farm

I miss the big family Christmases we once had. My mother's family of 8 brother's and sisters would all bring their kids over to my small 1100 square foot house and we would all cram in the basement, frontroom and kitchen. Mom would make gingerbread cookies with all of the kids names on them and hang them from strings.

Mom would start cooking for days.

- 50 City Chicken
- 16 Quarts of spaghetti sauce
- 30 Pieces of Fried chicken
- Ham
- Many, many eastern european pastries (all home-made).
- Relatives would bring an array of salads and veggies.

I don't remember the gifts my relatives gave me as much as I remember how fun it was to spend time with the gang.

My mother's sister did the same for Thanksgiving and another sister for Easter.

Unfortunately today, everyone wants their own "quiet Christmas at home" with their immediate families. Todays kids barely know their cousins.

Fortunately, this may be changing as some of my own cousins are longing for some of the old days.

I miss going to the corner store and getting a big bag of lollies for 20 cents, most of them were 2 for a cent. Now you're lucky to get any for less than 5c each- and they're way smaller too I'm sure

I miss being able to buy fireworks(legally).
My son has never known the fun of picking out all the great fireworks you could get (just like picking out the lollies ) and counting down the days til you lit them up

OK - people, I don't know if this was a Great Lakes thing here in Michigan back in the 60's and 70s.

Does anyone remember BlackJack Gum? I remember they sold three strange flavors - BlackJack (like black licorice), Tea Berry, and Clove. They made a comeback in recent years, then the blackjack disappeared again and I've been unable to find it.

I really miss Black Jack gum

EDIT: YEAH!!!!!! I found some on the web . I just ordered two boxes at $12.50 each from this site:

http://www.candydirect.com/gums/Black-Jack-Gum.html

They had the Clove gum too, but I didn't much like that.

I tried to buy the stuff on the web and was told the company had discontinued making it.

Ditto that, but for me, it is Dad that I miss. We lost him in 92.

I really miss my dogs, Nina and Candy too.

I don't miss anything. I still do all the same things I did when I was a couple years younger. Except now I don't have as much free time. Sports school and work are my life...

I suppose I could say that I miss the irresponsibility of youth, but I'm paying for a lot of that now (e.g. 2 root canals at 23). I can also say I miss riding my bike, though when I start running again, I won't really care anymore.

The "Good Old Days" are coming up for me, especially when I finally get my own place (in 2 weeks).

What do you miss about the good old days when you were a kid, or maybe just when you were younger than you are now? Almost everybody misses something from way back when... so name it!

When you sit at your desk, and work is a chore,
You remember the good old days of yore;
When you went skating down the street;
And music played a steady beat;

But now is the future, things have changed;
Your home's no longer on the range;
You have a job, and things to do;
People now depend on you;
Though yesterday was fun;
A new day has begun...

I miss playing hide and seek in the cow pasture after dark. It could get messy!

I miss the times that a group of us kids would get together and paint chicken coops and sheds for local farmers. Our payment was a picnic lunch made by the farmers wife.

I miss our Saturday night Monopoly tournaments.

I miss going fishing with my Dad and usually catching more fish than him. Just a bit of info... Don't believe anyone when they tell you that you have to be quiet while fishing or you will scare the fish away. Silly Dad.

I miss sitting in my Grandma's garden and eating her cherry tomatos off the vine. Same with Strawberries.

I miss when we would play demolition row boats. That was a hoot!

I miss.. KingTongChrisClamorWallyWallyLettichErnieManFromGlad who had me convinced that you had to pump the tail on a cow to get the pressure up before milking them. I've never seen a group of people laugh so hard.

I miss sitting outside with my Grandpa at night and him teaching me all about star constellations. I know he is up there somewhere.

I miss the smell of freshly copied paper. ]

I miss my Golden Retriever, Bandit and Irish Setter, Tweezy. Best two friends a girl could have. Oh, and my pig, Simon. I DON'T miss the rooster Peckerhead. He would attack me everytime I would walk in the chicken coop.

I miss my first chemistry set. Man, did I ever have fun with that!!

I could go on and on...

spending the whole day in/on the lake (and not worring about sunburns) swimming, fishing, building sand castles; running around the yard like a crazy person catching butterflys; playing in the woods coming home covered in mud (did this in college too since I went to school for logging ); kickball games that lasted for hours; doing absolutely nothing for hours and not feeling guilty about it.

playin in the backyard and it seemed to be huge, sleeping at granma's house, getting your face painted, playin with balloons, watching gumby, building sand castles, catching your first fish, waking up early on christmans day when you still beleived in santa,trying to catch the little sand whiting and the beach, only being able to eat happy meals, playin with your cousins for 2 hours then sleeping for 4.

One of my favorites:

An application was for employment
A program was a TV show
A cursor used profanity
A keyboard was a piano!

Memory was something that you lost with age
A CD was a bank account
And if you had a 3 1/2 inch floppy
You hoped nobody found out!

Compress was something you did to garbage
Not something you did to a file
And if you unzipped anything in public
You'd be in jail for a while!

Log on was adding wood to a fire
Hard drive was a long trip on the road
A mouse pad was where a mouse lived
And a backup happened to your commode!

Cut - you did with a pocket knife
Paste you did with glue
A web was a spider's home
And a virus was the flu!

I guess I'll stick to my pad and paper
And the memory in my head
I hear nobody's been killed in a computer crash
But when it happens they wish they were dead!

I miss the size of lollies and chocolates being as I remember them.

I remeber when a "wagon wheel" was almost as big as your head and a spacefood stick had to be eaten in about a dozen bites.

I bought a pkt of spacefood sticks recently (don't ask!) and could have sworn the things had shrunk. Of course not really but you know the drill.

Actually buildings from childhood you visit have this resize factor too.

that's all I have to say...
