I admit to the guilty pleasure of watching some bad movies, but usually the movies in question are so bad they're hilarious to watch. Old Edward D. Wood numbers and really bad B-movies such as Teenagers From Outer Space fall into this category. If you're looking for an antedote to this, sit down in front of Wild Women Of Wongo or Buranga The Tree Monster or that silly movie which featured an alien composed of a gorilla suit with a diving helmet on top (which was filmed in the Mojave Desert in summer - the actor playing that part should have claimed danger money). All good fun, and something that will take your mind off the garbage you've just endured. If you're looking for something to take a girlfriend to, by the way, allow me to recommend any period costume drama made by the Merchant & Ivory directing team. A Room With A View and Howard's End are two especially sparkling ones. If your girlfriend then says "Where's the car chase?", change your girlfriend. |

If I was a guy, I'd rather have a girlfriend that liked car chases and Jackass than a girlfriend that obsessed over stupid "chick flicks" and nonsense like that. I mentally divide movies into different categories: Good Drama: A Beautiful Mind, Dances with Wolves, Life is Beautiful, Apocalypse Now, etc... Good Intelligent Comedy: Coen Brothers, Kevin Smith, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, etc... Good Crappy Comedy: Happy Gilmore, Cannibal! The Musical, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, etc... Good Stupid Comedy: Jackass, Jackass: Number Two, etc... Documentaries: March of the Penguins, David Attenborough, Spellbound, etc... Good Kids' Movies: Toy Story, Shrek, etc... Good Action/Adventure: Star Wars, Jurassic Park, etc... Crappy Movies: Everything else. I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

Amen. Chick flicks are a waste of film. I don't go to theaters often, but when I do, it isn't to watch a bad movie. |

The inference being that such films are effectively little more than visual and emotional candy floss. To give you an idea of what is meant, the following three films have been described collectively as "The Unholy Trinity Of Chick Flick-dom": Steel Magnolias Beaches Pretty Woman It's a pity that so many films featuring Julia Roberts fall into this mould, because if someone would give her a role that actually tested her acting skills, she'd probably run away with an Oscar or two. Instead, she's wheeled on as a piece of eye candy to make life bearable for any men in the cinema audience who have been dragged along by their girlfriends to see something that is vacuous, trite and irritating. Mind you, of late she's been elbowed aside by Renee Zellweger - the mere mention of Bridget Jones is enough to make most men recoil with visceral revulsion. Fundamentally, a 'chick flick' is elegantly packaged self-indulgent neurosis pretending to be genius-level insight into the human condition on a par with Voltaire or Sartre - frequently involving romantic entanglements (or the lack thereof), almost as frequently heaping the blame upon anyone but the principal (and, upon ob I'd also point you in the direction of one or two Sandra Bullock movies as examples. |

However, rather than cry, the physically express their disdain by sweating excessively, making dryly sarcastic comments, and drinking beer. That’s right, you heard me. Wanna fight about it? |
