Hey guys, I know some of you are pretty savvy ID'ing some non-fish things. I've got a tree I'm not sure what it is. I'm thinking it's a Magnolia of some sort. Ideas?

Hey Shini, where is the tree, geographically? It looks like it could be a saucer magnolia, or maybe an osage orange?

Definitely some sort of Magnolia (note the cones), and probably a US-native species.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

It's a magnolia. There are dozens of species native to the US, and IDing them can be quite difficult. This photo is not enough to accurately ID the species - I can't even tell what the texture of the bark is. If I had to throw out a guess as to species, I would say cucumber magnolia - but that could very easily be wrong.

Dendrology (the study of trees and woody shrubs and vines) is quite difficult. Many species have very subtle differences that require a trained eye to look at the color and shape of leaf buds, texture of the bark, even smell and taste of different parts of the plant (for example, black oak has a distinctive bitter taste in the bark!). I learned over 200 species in my dendrology class, and those were only ones native to the area around Purdue or commonly planted. That said, we were graded on being able to distinguish species of trees based on twigs with the leaves removed - it's not a field I would recommend studying to anyone who didn't need to learn trees for their major/career.

PS Natalie - the correct term for the fruit on a magnolia is an aggregate of follicles.

Haha, well, having been suckered into doing "Forestry" for Science Olympiad I can at least say that I know tree ID is a pain... Thanks guys.

Fossils was awesome, and my crowning achievement senior year was taking 1st away from the charter school. Here in our state, the charter school basically gets 1st in every event, so it's always an upset when anyone else takes 1st.

Heh I was gonna say magnolia as well

Was I the only one that had to do leaf books in 8th grade?
We had to have leaves from 50 different species of trees with their correct ID using some yes no thing in the back of Tree id books.

Trees in oz are fairly easy to ID. Seems they're all gum trees . Even the ones with coconuts or bananas or mangoes

^_^
