Today these two guys came into the fish store looking for some new fish for their tank. The only problem was that their tank was a seven gallon that already had two goldfish in it.

That's nothing compared to what was to come: They wanted to get a 4" dyed parrotfish (we were planning to use it as a feeder), a 3" Boesemani rainbow, and a 4" clown pleco! We tried our hardest to convince them not to do it, but they wouldn't listen. They didn't care. We had to sell them the fish however because if we didn't, they would have just gone to another store and get them and say bad stuff around our store.

Needless to say, the manager wrote "VOID" on the receipt in big letters, because when all of their fish die, we're not paying for it.

Also, they said they used to have 12 fish in that tank, but they all died. They said it was because of lead poisoning. Pfft... Most likely they had used a lead plant weight (which are completely harmless to fish), the fish died from ammonia poisoning, and then they blamed it on the weight.

Some people don't deserve to keep animals...

I'm sorry. . But, it does sound as if you tried your hardest to dissuade them. It is horrible, but hopefully they will come out of denial and learn about the proper way to keep fish.

well, maybe when all their fish keep dying they will either try to find out the true reason why or they will give up. either way is ok by me.

and a 4" clown pleco?

Ireally don't see how you could be forced to sell a customer anything either. . . so what if they go to another store? all you can do is hope the employees at another LFS turn them down also. On the plus side it might be a good opportunity to try and upsell them a huge tank.

Well it wasn't me who sold them. It was the manager. I wouldn't have done it, but I can't stop him.

Believe me, I'm all for refusing sales to people who can't takke care of their fish. I've turned down several people who wanted "one of those little catfish to clean the bottom of the tank". I also won't sell glass cats and most tetras in numbers fewer than three. So like I said, I would have not sold it, but the situation wasn't in my control.
