I just took a trip to Oregon, and had a great time. Crater Lake: The coastal aquarium: Deep sea isopod: Sweet mantis shrimp eating: |

The first two pics of Crater Lake are wonderful ... convert them to greyscale and they're knocking on Ansel Adams' door ... seriously, they're VERY nicely composed! The waterfall shot is ... well, the word that comes immediately to mind is 'superb'. Again, magnificent photograph. That rock formation is weird. And the way you've lined up the pointed projections with the tall conifers in the background is again, wonderful to behold. I can think of a few professionals who would like that in their portfolios! Heh, everyone loves cute furry animals. Nice shot, though I'd have cropped that one to 'zoom in' on the critter. Was that the limit of your zoom lens by any chance? I take it he wasn't tame enough to approach any closer ... The first aquarium shot ... what on earth is that? If that's a sponge, it's a strange one. You fr I take it the seal was putting on his 'oh no, not another tourist with a camera' face? He looks positively disdainful ...that one is begging for some speech balloons! Was that deep sea isopod in a pressurised aquarium? Now that's a piece of engineering I'd like to see if so ... as well as the inhabitants. Heh, EVERY Mantis Shrimp on the planet is vying for the title of 'Mr Personality', and this one is no exception! Is the bird a Mandarin Duck? Only by a peculiar quirk of fate, they're running wild in parts of the UK. Some aristocrat thought they'd look nice on his lake back in the 18th century or thereabouts, and they've spread ever since. Pity his back is turned to the camera - Mandarin Ducks have very ornate faces. All in all, a nice collection of shots. The waterfall one I want to borrow for some Photoshopping! |

The rocks used to be fumaroles and are now exposed above the old lava flow. They do look really cool, the park calls them the "Pinnacles". I was zoomed in on the chipmunk as far as possible. They were pretty tame (probably because all the tourists feed them), but still didn't seem to like getting within ten feet of a person. The first aquarium pic is of a starfish, I want to say it's a sunflower star. They grow very large and get lots of arms, as you can see. That wasn't the biggest one at the aquarium either. The isopod was actually kept in a normal aquarium, if I'm not mistaken. A fairly recent marine hobby book written by an ex-aquarium curator introduces these creatures. They're pretty intriguing and interesting, but not behaviorally. They just sit around until food comes. The boid was actually a tufted puffin. Pretty cool birds. Thanks for the feedback. I really can't take any credit though, I have no idea how to manipulate a lot of the settings on this camera yet. I remember going to DisneyWorld when I was little and lived near Tampa. I collected autographs from nearly all of the Disney characters. Something I'm almost ashamed of now. |

terranova Fish Master Posts: 1984 Kudos: 1889 Votes: 229 Registered: 09-Jul-2003 | I swear this is that last time i'm posting. In July I took a trip up to Boston to go on a service retreat called Gospel Roads, a program run by the Salesian family which is a Catholic organization. I met people from all over, and we did a ton of volunteer work and such. It was AMAZING, so I'll share some of those pictures too, even though it wasn't really a "vacation." Here is basically our entire group, plus or minus a couple kids, on the beach in Boston after a long day of work. we traveled by van to all of our locations - you'd be amazed at how much fun we had on our day "off" where we were Boston tourists, we took a swan boat ride me hiding behind a black garbage bag during a service project jousting with wooden swords at the Habitat for Humanity construction site me & my friend frank fun fun fun one day while we were doing some cooking...we had an incident with some lobsterz... tourist day again...they have these funky cows all over the place! our group at Emmaus house, a program that sets up shelters my closest friends with me, out to dinner our last day they say what happens in boston, stays in boston, but i have to share this...we took a little adventure on our last day, to see this lake right... I was exploring... & then my shoes got stuck... and well... we just ended up going in the lake I swear we're wearing clothes. It was a good time. I'm done for now. -Formerly known as the Ferretfish |
